In Krayenberggemeinde, hiking, the landscapes of the Werra and Felda rivers, and local history are among the defining themes. Trails lead through the Werra and Felda valleys and into the Krayenberg region. In Dorndorf and Dietlas, the local history museum and Feldeck Water Castle offer two places with distinct histories. The Merkers Werra floodplain is another highlight, where white storks have nested every year since 2011. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to keep these highlights separate: you can explore both nature and outdoor activities as well as the history of individual districts.

Hiking between mountain and valley

The Vorderrhön Dorndorf Hiking Club and the municipal administration have developed five circular hiking trails. They are located in the Werra and Felda valleys and in the Krayenberg region. The routes run between mountain and valley and around and through the districts of Krayenberggemeinde. Together with possible connecting trails, they cover 57 kilometres. For planning your walks, keep two figures in mind: the five established circular hiking trails and the total distance including possible extensions.

The hiking offer includes paved hiking and forest paths, numerous rest areas with tables and benches, and viewpoints overlooking the municipality and the Werra and Felda valleys. Hiking and Nordic walking are the activities on offer. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider both the landscape and the type of activity. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out on a specific route.

The Werra floodplain and its wildlife

The Merkers Werra floodplain adds a nature highlight to the trail landscape: white storks have nested there every year since 2011. Their annual nesting is a distinctive feature of the floodplain, but it does not guarantee that you will see storks during a particular visit. Together with the viewpoints overlooking the Werra and Felda valleys, it makes the landscape a highlight in its own right alongside the hiking trails.

Local history in Dorndorf, a water castle in Dietlas

Since 2007, the Dorndorf Local History Museum has been housed in the village’s former print shop. Its extensive collection focuses on the development of crafts and industry, as well as the lives of the people of Dorndorf. Notable figures and artists are also among its subjects. The former print shop and the collection thus connect a specific place with the history of work and the area.

Feldeck Water Castle is located in the district of Dietlas on the Felda. The estate has been known since 1376 and became the property of the Lords of Buttler as a water castle in 1626. Today, it is occupied by the von Buttler family. The former residential tower is part of the estate; depressions in the park hint at the former moats. The historical details and visible traces in the park give the site a different character from the collection at the local history museum in Dorndorf.

A nearby historic site and a cycle path

In the surrounding area, the municipality of Tiefenort is home to the site of Krayenburg Castle. Krayenburg is one of the oldest stone castle complexes in the Werra Valley; today, its site is a listed archaeological and architectural monument. It is therefore geographically distinct from Feldeck Water Castle, which is located in the district of Dietlas within Krayenberggemeinde.

For another way to explore on two wheels, the new cycle path runs from Tiefenort below Krayenberg, through the Werra floodplain, to Merkers. It is a cycling route, not one of the five circular hiking trails. If you plan to use it, check current trail conditions before setting out.
