In Puy-De-Dôme, striking traces of Earth’s history meet cultural sites, walking routes and outdoor activities. The Chaîne des Puys–Limagne UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Limagne fault, the aligned volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys and the inverted relief of Montagne de la Serre. The landscape formed 35 million years ago, following the formation of the Alps. As an exceptional example of continental rifting, it illustrates one of the five major phases of plate tectonics. Geology, history and outdoor pursuits offer different ways to shape your trip.

Volcanoes, summits and sweeping views

The Plateau de Gergovie is an almost 70-hectare natural viewpoint offering 360-degree views across Auvergne. At the summit of Puy de Dôme, the Chemin des Conquérants loops around the peak in about 30 minutes. The Chemin de ronde offers a 360-degree panorama. On the western side, there is a picnic area, an indoor picnic room and restrooms; facilities may change.

The hiking trails of Auvergne VolcanSancy also pass through varied landscapes. The routes described include paths across high plateaus, puys, volcanoes and summits, as well as through forests, alongside lakes and rivers, and through natural areas. If you’d rather explore by bike, the Circuit des volcans – La boucle des Dômes is an 83-kilometre cycling loop. It circles the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys and starts at the foot of Puy de Dôme. There are two options for shortening the route: Bonnabaud-Champille and St Pierre Le Chastel – Bannières. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Another cycling loop, the Circuit aux portes de Riom – Entre pierre et eau, reaches Gour de Tazenat, an exceptional natural volcanic lake. For planning purposes, you can compare a summit walk of about 30 minutes with an 83-kilometre cycling loop: these figures represent different types of activities and scales, not comparable walking and cycling times.

Heritage and distinctive places to visit

The Temple of Mercury on Puy de Dôme dates from the second century AD and is considered one of the largest Roman mountain sanctuaries in the Western world. Olby also combines walks with archaeological traces: walking routes lead to the Calvary of Puy de Cros and the Roman bridge of Glavin. Excavations around the church uncovered remains dating from the fifth to the twelfth century.

The Musée départemental de la Céramique in Lezoux explores, among other things, Lezoux sigillata pottery, produced during the first five centuries of our era, and its role in spreading Roman culture across Europe. The fully accessible cultural offering includes activities for families, young people, older people and people with disabilities; individual programs may change. Outside, there is a relaxation and picnic area. Free parking is available for cars, motorhomes and buses. You can reach the museum via the A89, exit 1 Lezoux–Billom, or via the D2089. Check current road signs before setting out.

Vulcania combines dynamic activities with big-screen films, a large planetarium, science education and live shows. Specific programs may vary. Different ways of learning and experiencing are on offer, from the archaeological collections in Lezoux to the attractions at Vulcania.

Nature and activities in every season

In La Tour d’Auvergne, natural waterfalls and basalt columns define a protected natural landscape. At Lac d’Auvergne, activities include fishing, supervised swimming and water play; supervision and facilities may vary by season. In winter, the Sancy Ouest Nordic area offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Conditions and access may vary depending on the season.

The Panoramique des Dômes rack railway reaches an altitude of 1,465 metres in 15 minutes and gives all visitors access to Puy de Dôme. T2C bus route P36 goes directly to the departure station. As operating conditions may change, it’s worth checking the current timetable before you travel. At the summit, you can consider the two routes in terms of their different offerings: the approximate duration of the Chemin des Conquérants and the panorama from the Chemin de ronde.

Regional specialties and choosing where to stay

Regional products also tell the story of the landscape. Saint-Nectaire is made in the Monts Dore at elevations above 700 metres, between Cantal and Puy-De-Dôme; it is aged in both departments. The geographical area of Bleu d’Auvergne also extends across part of Puy-De-Dôme.

When looking for a hotel, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: geological landscapes, Roman history, cycling or seasonal activities. Then compare hotel locations with the specific places you want to visit, and plan around what you actually intend to do. If you’re travelling by rack railway or along cycling routes, you can check the relevant timetables and conditions separately.
