A circular route leads through the medieval village to the castle ruins and on into the bocage landscape around Étang de Montmazot. There is also a viewpoint on the château grounds, a recreation area with fishing opportunities and activities involving horses. When looking for hotels, you can decide whether architectural history, hiking or leisure activities should determine your choice of destination.
Historic landmarks and their stories
The belfry of Montaigut has been listed as a historic monument since 2010. The belfry houses the 800-kilogram Charlotte bell. It was cast in 1567 and paid for by the consuls. The combination of protected status and a precisely dated bell adds a specific detail to the history of the building.
One tower remains of Porte Montmarault, which formerly consisted of two towers; it was incorporated into the town’s fortifications. Maison de l’Apothicaire is a 13th-century residence. A carved corner stone depicts an allegory of pharmacists. The village’s history thus spans bell casting, fortifications and an allegorically carved corner stone.
The defenses of the Château de Montaigut can also be understood through specific structures: attackers had to pass a barbican and two defensive works to reach the château. A barbican is a fortified outer defense; here, it forms part of a sequence that includes two other defensive works.
Views and trails through Montaigut
In clear weather, the viewpoint on the château grounds offers views across Auvergne, Bourbonnais and la Marche. This regional panorama adds a scenic dimension to the historic landmarks.
The municipality offers three signposted hiking trails and a mountain-biking route that explore Montaigut and its surroundings. The “Circuit du Grand Cerf” circular route starts at Place de la Mairie, as does the “Montaigut médiéval” circular route. Parking is available next to the square. The “Montaigut médiéval” route passes through the medieval village to the castle ruins, then continues through the bocage landscape around Étang de Montmazot. If you would like a walk that takes in both local history and the landscape, this circular route combines the two. You can choose a route based on whether you plan to travel on foot or by mountain bike. Before setting out, check the latest route and parking information, as trail conditions and parking availability may change.
More leisure activities
Montaigut’s recreation area offers fishing opportunities. Equin’oxe offers activities involving horses, including rides, games and horse care. The examples therefore range from rides and games to caring for the animals. If you plan to take part in a particular activity, check in advance what options are currently available.
