Pontaumur brings together several specific travel interests: trails along the Sioulet, trout fishing, a group visit to an apiary and the Église Saint-Michel. When planning, it helps to distinguish between the activities. For one circular route, the distance, duration and difficulty are specified; on another trail, changes in the landscape and a precise starting point help with orientation. There is also a visit with tasting and a historic building.

Hiking along the Sioulet

Le long du Sioulet – Parcours trail begins with sweeping views across grassy plateaus between Pontaumur and Miremont. The trail then enters the forest; on the way back, it follows the banks of the Sioulet. The route therefore passes through three clearly distinct landscape sections. The starting point is in front of the Pontaumur post office at Place du Foirail. The “Randonnées en Combrailles” app is also available to download for Pontaumur. As its availability may change, check in advance whether it can still be downloaded.

The Les gorges du Sioulet circular route

Les gorges du Sioulet offers a different approach to planning a walk: the circular route is 7.5 kilometres long, takes two hours and is of moderate difficulty. Check these route details before setting out. The gorges are considered wild; the route is an experience for people who appreciate unspoilt landscapes. Pont de Pellefort is highlighted as a key feature of the route. Unlike Le long du Sioulet, this route has fixed details on distance, time and difficulty. Le long du Sioulet, by contrast, is described in terms of the sequence of plateau, forest and riverbank, as well as its starting point in front of the post office. This makes it easier to choose between a circular route with clearly stated figures and a trail whose changing landscape is highlighted.

Trout fishing along the Sioulet

Fishing is another distinctive feature of the Sioulet. The Site de pêche – Rivière Le Sioulet fishing area in Pontaumur is an open watercourse in the first category; trout are the main catch here. Methods of trout fishing include toc fishing with natural bait, fly fishing and spinning or casting. Unlike the hiking trails, the focus here is not on distance or the course of the landscape, but on the watercourse category, trout and fishing methods. This gives you a separate basis for weighing up a route against a fishing-focused activity.

An apiary visit and the Église Saint-Michel

For groups, the Miellerie Conservatoire de l'Abeille Noire des Combrailles offers a two-hour visit to the apiary with a tasting. The visit lasts as long as the Les gorges du Sioulet circular route; however, the experience is different: here, an apiary visit and tasting go together, while the focus there is on the 7.5-kilometre hike.

The Église Saint-Michel in Pontaumur was built right at the end of the 19th century. Its construction date places the building in a historical period and adds a cultural and historical dimension to the landscape-based activities along the Sioulet.
