Grandval offers different ways to explore local history and landscape. The Église Saint-Pierre represents Gothic architecture, while the Couderc reflects the communal organization of the village. The Moulins des Donnes Route adds a circular trail with views of the Monts du Forez. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: you can focus on architectural history, village life, or a hike with a set distance and duration.

Church and Village History

The Église Saint-Pierre is a unified and complete example of a 15th-century Auvergnat Gothic church, typical of the Livradois school of architecture. Its construction date and classification mark different historical moments: the church dates from the 15th century, and a decree of 9 October 1969 classified it as a historic monument. The building thus brings together a regional stylistic designation and a precise later classification.

The Couderc is at the heart of village organization in Grandval. It was also a social gathering place where people discussed village affairs and celebrated; it also served as a strictly regulated grazing area. These different functions give the site several facets: it was an organizational center, a place for discussion and celebration, and a regulated pasture used by the community. Comparing it with the church shifts the focus from an individual building to the structures of village life.

The Moulins des Donnes Route

The Moulins des Donnes Route is a 6.5-kilometer circular trail that takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine, take the D 37 for four kilometers toward Grandval. The route offers views of the Monts du Forez and Pierre-Sur-Haute. At 1,634 meters, Pierre-Sur-Haute is the highest point in the Monts du Forez. The surrounding area includes countryside and forest, where there are herds of livestock and guard dogs.

The circular trail includes two out-and-back detours: ten minutes to the Moulins des Donnes and five minutes to a calvary. In the village of Fournier, the route also passes a washhouse. The detours differ both in their destinations and in their stated durations. The washhouse is another notable point along the route through Fournier.

The route is open daily from 1 January to 31 December, weather permitting. Take this weather condition into account when planning your trip and check before setting out whether it is suitable for the hike. This will help you fit the circular route and its stated duration into your stay.

Which focus suits your trip?

If you are mainly interested in architectural history, the Église Saint-Pierre offers an architectural perspective that can be understood in terms of style and century. The Couderc, by contrast, draws attention to community organization and former uses of the village. The circular trail offers a different focus: it combines a specific distance and duration with landscape views and named stops. If you would like to include both culture and exercise in your trip, you can treat the historical sites as one focus and plan the weather-dependent route separately.
