Orbeil lies on the right bank of the Allier and is surrounded by fields, pastures and vineyards. This rural setting provides a backdrop for a stay focused on the landscape, cultural history or an active route. The Domaine de Vort hike, the Via Allier cycling stage and the local dance and music group offer different ways to explore the area. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you would rather explore on foot, include a cycling stage or focus on Orbeil’s history and culture.

On foot or by bike

The Domaine de Vort route is an 8 km loop that follows the Allier and passes through wooded sections. It also offers lovely open views of the Issoire basin, including the village of Saint-Yvoine and the Lembron plain. The riverside setting, woodland paths and far-reaching views provide a variety of landscapes along the hike.

For planning purposes, this option is clearly different from the Via Allier: the Domaine de Vort is an 8 km walking loop, while the ninth cycling stage from Vic-le-Comte to Issoire takes cyclists through Orbeil. You can choose what to make the focus of your stay based on the activity and format you prefer: a single circular hike or a cycling stage.

Ybois: volcanic hill and history

Ybois is an ancient volcano; a powerful fortress once stood on the hill, but it was destroyed under Louis XIII. In November 1586, Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, took refuge in the fortress of Ybois. Geology and local history come together here across two distinct periods: the volcano tells the story of the hill’s formation, while the fortress and its history shape the site’s historical legacy.

Auvergne dance and music traditions

The Sabot d’Orbeil Bourrée Yssoirienne group preserves Auvergne culture through choreographed bourrées and traditional music. Cabrettes, accordions and hurdy-gurdies are part of this musical tradition. The group welcomes anyone who would like to dance with the group or learn to dance. It also hosts a tea dance every year; the date varies. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the date in advance.

Plan your journey and hotel search

From Issoire, take the A75 to the Orbeil exit, then the D9 and finally the D14 to the hamlet of Pont d’Orbeil. Check road conditions before setting out. This will help you tailor your search to the activities that matter most for your trip.
