Saulzet-le-Froid lies on a plateau at an altitude of 1,000 m, between the Chaîne des Puys to the north and the Monts Dore to the south. The surrounding area combines a landscape shaped by volcanic features with wetlands, hiking trails and traces of history. When planning a stay, it is worth looking at the specific routes: their lengths, durations and difficulty levels vary and can help you estimate how much time to allow for your trip.

Uplands, wetlands and protected nature

The Narse d’Espinasse is a peat bog formed in a maar. Together with the 989 m-high Puy de l’Enfer, it forms an exceptional geological site. The summit of Puy de Combegrasse is at an altitude of 1,120 m and offers views of the Chaîne des Puys and the Puy de Dôme. The wetlands and this named viewpoint thus offer two different impressions of the surrounding area.

The Narse d’Espinasse is protected as a biotope by a prefectural decree. On the Puy de Combegrasse et narse d’Espinasse route, visitors are asked to stay on the paths in the Narse area to avoid disturbing its flora and fauna.

The Veyre is also part of the landscape: it is formed where the Labadeau and Narse rivers meet, flows through Saulzet-le-Froid, and continues towards Lac d’Aydat.

Hiking routes by time and difficulty

The easy, blue-marked Puy de Montenard circular hike in Saulzet-le-Froid covers 5.0 km and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The route offers panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys, the Monts Dore, the Sancy massif and the Monne Valley. It therefore combines a comparatively short stated walking time with several named scenic areas.

Another easy loop is Puy de Combegrasse et narse d’Espinasse. It is 9.8 km long, takes 3 hours and passes through Saulzet-le-Froid. Compared with Puy de Montenard, it is longer and has a longer stated duration; both circular hikes are rated easy.

Le puy de Baladou takes considerably more time: this difficult circular hike is 18.5 km long and takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes. Its route description reaches the entrance to Saulzet-le-Froid and then heads towards Pessade and into the hamlet. The three routes therefore differ in length, rating and stated duration.

The GR4 also passes through Saulzet-le-Froid. It runs from Royan in the Charente-Maritime département to Grasse in the Alpes-Maritimes, placing the village on a route whose endpoints are far apart.

Traces of history and other activities

Near the hamlet of Zanières, visible traces of a former Roman road remain. The ruins of a former inn called “La Baraque” are also located there. Both are connected with the history of the hamlet, but they are different kinds of remains: traces of a road on the one hand, and the ruins of an inn on the other.

The church in Saulzet-le-Froid houses a Black Madonna dating from the mid-Middle Ages. It adds a religious cultural heritage site in the village to the historic traces at Zanières.

Chouette Parc offers an alpine coaster, bouncy castles, treetop adventure courses, trampolines and throwing games. Since individual activities may change, check which options are available before your visit.
