Vollore-Ville: Château History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Vollore-Ville
Vollore-Ville is located in the Parc naturel régional du Livradois-Forez and on a natural balcony offering views of the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy. The town’s character combines landscape with architectural and religious history. Notable features include the Château de Vollore, the Église Saint-Maurice, and the Place de l’église; an unusual covered passageway and the history of a pilgrimage site are also part of its story.
Historic Buildings and Religious History
The Château de Vollore was built in the 12th century; today, the only surviving part of the former fortress is its imposing Romanesque keep. The château has been owned by the same family for more than two centuries and is now the residence of the descendants of General La Fayette.
Visitors can explore the park and exhibition space. A puzzle trail and an escape game are also offered around the château. As access rules and activity availability may change, check visiting options in advance.
The Place de l’église lies at the center of one of the département’s earliest fortifications and is now Vollore-Ville’s central square. The first three Romanesque bays of the earlier building remain in the Église Saint-Maurice. It also houses a polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 12th century.
Le Pedde is a covered passageway suspended above rue des Cros du four in Vollore-Ville. It connects a historic house to its garden without touching the street. The Maison de la Tourelle is a Renaissance residence; parts of its façades were listed as Monuments historiques in 1926. Those interested in architecture can compare the two examples: Le Pedde connects a house to its garden without touching the street; the Maison de la Tourelle is a Renaissance residence whose façades were partly listed as Monuments historiques in 1926.
The Notre-Dame de la Confrérie sanctuary, also known as Notre-Dame des Neiges, became a much-visited pilgrimage site. The chapel of Notre-Dame des Neiges was restored in the 19th century.
