Thiers: Following the Trail of Cutlery Making
Accommodation in Thiers
Thiers brings together the heritage of cutlery making, contemporary art and trails along the Durolle. The Musée de la Coutellerie focuses on the development of the craft, while the Vallée des Rouets and the Sentier d’interprétation Vallée des Usines lead to different traces of the former cutlery workshops. A medieval discovery trail offers another way to explore the city’s history.
Cutlery making from history to the present day
The Musée de la Coutellerie traces the social and economic history of cutlery making, from its artisanal beginnings to the start of industrialisation. Its 700 exhibits document the skill of cutlers and show how knife designs, techniques and materials have evolved from the 16th century to the present day. This offers a look at both the craft and its working life, as well as the changes to the knives themselves.
The museum offers temporary exhibitions, creative workshops, events and talks throughout the year; the programme may change. The Cité des couteliers offers a contemporary perspective, presenting contemporary cutlery making and innovations of the 21st century. Together, the museum and the Cité offer two different perspectives on the same subject: the historical development of the craft and its creative direction today.
Trails along the Durolle and historic workplaces
The Vallée des Rouets comprises two trails along the Durolle, with a total length of three kilometres. They follow the traces of the historic émouleurs, or grinders. The last working grinding wheel is located in the valley at “chez Lyonnet”. Visitors can see the wheel in operation and learn about the working conditions of the émouleurs. The site is freely accessible year-round; access arrangements may change. Check the conditions before your visit.
The Sentier d’interprétation Vallée des Usines is a separate trail. It also runs along the Durolle and leads to traces of the former cutlery workshops. Its terrain is an important consideration when planning: the Sentier has steep inclines, and sturdy footwear is recommended. This allows you to combine an exploration of the history of the craft with a practical assessment of the trail, without confusing the two routes.
Art, the old town and views
Founded in 1988, the Centre d’art contemporain du Creux de l’Enfer is a contemporary art centre in an exceptional industrial building above the Durolle. Its annual programme includes solo and group exhibitions, discussion series and talks, educational activities and special public events. As the programme changes over time, it is worth checking the latest listings if you would like to plan your stay around them.
The medieval discovery trail offers another perspective on Thiers. It passes through the protected historic centre, with its carved half-timbered houses and Hôtels particuliers. From the Belvédère du Rempart, views stretch to the Chaîne des Puys. Architecture and landscape thus complement the story of the craft: you can focus your stay on historic buildings, art, industrial workplaces or the view.
Thiers as a destination for culture lovers
The attractions offer different perspectives rather than all addressing the same question: the Musée de la Coutellerie presents the development of cutlery making, the Cité des couteliers focuses on contemporary work, and the trails along the Durolle bring traces of past activities into view. The art programme, historic centre and viewpoint add to the options. If you are looking for a hotel in Thiers, you can plan your stay around the cultural perspective that interests you most. When planning, also take into account the marked steep inclines on the Sentier d’interprétation Vallée des Usines, as well as possible changes to access arrangements and event programmes.
