You can plan a stay in Parentignat around two main themes: the heritage of the Château de Parentignat and the routes along the Allier. The château offers a tour of furnished rooms and an English-style park; the Pont suspendu de Parentignat suspension bridge recalls an earlier river crossing. The grounds also feature an orienteering course and a GPS-guided treasure hunt, while cyclists can choose a cycling loop or the signposted Via Allier route. These distinctions can help with your planning: decide whether you would like to focus on interiors, the history of the park, the history of the river or a route during your stay.

Crossing the Allier and a listed monument

The Pont suspendu de Parentignat crossed the Allier between the left bank at Issoire and the right bank at Parentignat. In 1831, the bridge made it possible to cross the Allier instead of using the ferries at Parentignat, Orbeil and Les Pradeaux. A decree dated 29 October 1975 lists it as a historic monument. The two dates record different aspects: its function as a river crossing in 1831 and its listing as a monument in 1975. The bridge’s history also connects Parentignat with the former ferry routes to Orbeil and Les Pradeaux.

The Château: a chamber and a tour

At the Château de Parentignat, attention is drawn to one particular room: the Louis XV chamber contains 18th-century furniture by cabinetmaker Nicolas Heurtaut. A 45-minute guided tour takes you through furnished rooms displaying a private art collection. The chamber and the tour offer different points of focus: the former highlights specific pieces of furniture, while the tour covers several furnished rooms and the collection. Access may vary seasonally, so check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The park and orienteering course

The park’s English-style design dates from the late 18th century. After the French Revolution, a pond with an island was created there. An orienteering course starts in the courtyard of honour at the Château de Parentignat, passes through the estate’s 15-hectare meadow and continues to the 3-hectare English-style park. The area figures refer to different sections: 15 hectares for the meadow and 3 hectares for the park. This makes it easy to compare the sizes of the two areas.

Geocaching and cycling routes

The grounds of the Château de Parentignat feature a GPS-guided treasure hunt (geocaching). At the end of the activity, you answer a quiz about the history of the château and the region. The quiz therefore looks not only at the château but also at its regional context.

The cycling loop “Circuit du Val d’Allier – Châteaux et villages au pays de la reine Margot” passes through Parentignat and by its château. The Via Allier follows a different route: along the signposted “accès V70 sud” connection, it runs from Issoire towards Varennes-sur-Usson via Parentignat. The cycling loop is defined by its destination in Parentignat and at the château; the Via Allier connection, by contrast, can be identified by Issoire as its starting point and Varennes-sur-Usson as its direction. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out.
