Rohrbach between Cultural Heritage and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Rohrbach
Rohrbach brings together rural cultural heritage, museums, textile craftsmanship and distinctive church interiors. You can choose different focuses for your stay: historic architecture, museums exploring perception, textile history or scenic routes. Offers available only at specific times also play a role in planning. This way, you can tailor your hotel stay to the experiences that interest you most.
Farmhouse, monastery and pilgrimage history
The Unterkagererhof is a site of rural cultural heritage, first mentioned in a document in 1287. Its typical four-sided Mühlviertel farmhouse preserves an architectural form that still corresponds to how it looked around 300 years ago. Visitors can see the passageway with its rammed-earth floor, the working bread oven, the cabbage cellar, the Black Kitchen and the parlour for retired farm owners. The architectural form and these individual rooms offer different insights into rural heritage.
The collegiate church at Schlägl Abbey is a three-nave Gothic church. Its altars, pulpit and choir stalls date from the 17th and 18th centuries and feature rich carving and inlay work. Members of the Premonstratensian Order have lived and worked at the abbey since 1218. At the church, you can see both the Gothic architecture and the furnishings added later.
The Maria Trost pilgrimage church was built in 1645/1655 on the site of a ruined castle. A Stations of the Cross path leads from the town square in Rohrbach-Berg to the church; information boards along the way explain how the chapels came about and their history. This combines a visit to the destination with the opportunity to explore the chapels along the way.
Museums exploring perception, textiles and printing
Since 2005, the Adalbert Stifter Museum and Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald local history museum have featured a permanent exhibition on Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald, the three-country region, and Adalbert Stifter’s life and literary and visual-art works. In Rohrbach-Berg, VILLA sinnenreich explores how we perceive the world between illusion and reality. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: one exhibition focuses on a place, a region and an influential figure; the other explores perception itself.
The Weaving Museum in Haslach traces the process from preparing flax to finished linen and the development of handlooms up to the Jacquard loom. The Textile Centre Haslach brings together textile history and culture with production and training. Together, these themes provide insight into both the individual stages of processing and the broader context of textile history and textile production.
The Letterpress Printing Museum illustrates the development of printing over the past 100 years and offers the chance to take part hands-on. During a guided tour, you can follow a printed product from its creation through to its finishing. Visits are available year-round by appointment.
Tours and experiences with their own schedules
At the Mühlviertler Oil Mill, a guided tour with an oil tasting takes place every Thursday at 11 a.m.; advance booking is not required. Tours also explain the history of the oil mill and historical oil production methods. If you want to make this a fixed part of your day, check the details in advance.
A visit to the Hop Experience Farm combines a short walk to the hop fields with a visit to the hop museum, a guided tour and a film about the hop harvest. This gives you the opportunity to explore hops both in the fields and through the exhibition and information about the harvest.
Altenfelden Zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals from over 200 species across an area of 80 hectares. At the “cultum venandi” Hunting Culture Museum, you can learn more about the history and traditions of hunting. Another option is a circular trail from the zoo to Rabenstein, which takes around five hours.
Trails, views and an autumn event
The Rohrbach-Berg Panorama Trail offers views over Rohrbach-Berg, the Bohemian Forest holiday region and the Mühlviertel. The Granitpilgern hiking trail takes a different amount of time: it runs for around 95 kilometres through the south-eastern part of the Rohrbach district, divided into three to four daily stages. This means you can choose between a circular trail of around five hours and a multi-day hike covering approximately 95 kilometres in total.
The Witches’ Market in Auberg has become an established autumn event and attracts numerous visitors year after year. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The activities mentioned differ both in subject matter and in the time they take. This selection can help you plan your stay and find a hotel for your trip to Rohrbach.
