Oepping: Hiking, Cycling and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Oepping
Oepping is part of the Zwischenmahlrücken landscape. When planning your trip, outdoor activities and architectural heritage offer different areas of focus. Numerous idyllic hiking trails cross the municipality, and a cycle route from the Bohemian Forest to the Danube also passes through Oepping. The Baroque parish church and Götzendorf Castle add two buildings, each with its own history and use, to these activities. You can tailor your stay to whether you are most interested in trails and cycling or in historic architecture.
Hiking and Cycling
Numerous idyllic hiking trails cross the municipality of Oepping. A cycle route also runs through the area, from the Bohemian Forest to the Danube. The routes offer different points of reference for planning: the hiking trails are within the municipality, while the cycle route is defined geographically by its two endpoints. This lets you distinguish between trails within the municipality and a cycling route with a wider reach. The area’s location in the Zwischenmahlrücken landscape adds another geographical reference. This gives you a starting point for planning your outing: should your focus be on hiking within the municipality or cycling between the named landscapes?
Oepping Parish Church
The Baroque Oepping Parish Church was built from 1693 to 1695 by master builder Carlo Antonio Carlone. The church interior was restored from 1994 to 1996, after which a new organ was installed. It was made by the W. Führer organ workshop in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The sequence brings different phases in the church’s history into view: its construction, the restoration of the interior and the later addition of the organ. For those interested in cultural history, this provides not only a link to the Baroque period but also a history of how the church’s furnishings developed. The dates help distinguish the original construction phase from the later restoration and subsequent organ building.
Götzendorf Castle
Götzendorf Castle has a history spanning 800 years. Its square courtyard is adorned with a noteworthy arcade dating from the 17th century. An arcade is a passage lined with arches; here, it shapes the design of the courtyard. Today, the castle houses the Götzendorf pastoral centre and a small castle church. It also contains historical documents and books from the Rohrbach District Archive, which opened in 2025. The castle therefore brings together a historic courtyard, archival collections and present-day pastoral use. Each of these aspects offers a different way to appreciate the building.
Explore Different Cultural Highlights
The parish church and Götzendorf Castle offer different cultural perspectives. The parish church is notable for its Baroque architecture, restoration and organ. At the castle, its long history, the arcaded courtyard, the District Archive’s documents and its present-day pastoral centre come together. If you want to focus your stay on culture, you can choose between the history of the church and its organ or the castle’s architecture and current use.
