Discover Neufelden: History, Water and Trails
Accommodation in Neufelden
Neufelden offers a range of options for a stay with different focuses: market history and historic buildings, as well as water, hiking, cycling and swimming. If you are looking for a hotel in Neufelden, these themes can help you plan your stay. The local history museum brings together the town’s history in one collection; trails and swimming spots put other activities in the spotlight.
History and Buildings
Neufelden was first mentioned in a document in 1217. Market activity and the salt trade along the “via regia,” the King’s Road to Bohemia, were already established at the time. Market life and trade are therefore among the town’s earliest historical points of reference.
The Neufelden local history museum is housed in the former Fronfeste, which was built as a prison in 1854. Around 1,200 well-preserved and restored exhibits can be viewed across approximately 250 m². The building’s former use and its collection offer two distinct historical points of interest.
Pürnstein Castle also shapes the town’s history: it has stood above the valley of the Große Mühl since the late 10th century. The remains of Blankenburg Castle are a separate site. They can be seen behind Neufelden railway station, where the Bairachbach flows into the Große Mühl. The organ in Neufelden parish church was newly built or reconstructed in 1997.
Reservoir and Trails
Neufelden Reservoir was created between 1919 and 1924. The village of Langhalsen previously stood in the valley depression now occupied by the reservoir. The history of the body of water therefore encompasses both its creation and the earlier settlement in the valley.
Two different descriptions can help you choose a hike: the MĂĽhltal hiking trails from Neufelden lead to the Danube. The PĂĽrnstein Trail, by contrast, starts in the town center, first leads to the reservoir, follows its shoreline and then climbs up to PĂĽrnstein Castle. You can choose based on your destination and the route described. Note that the PĂĽrnstein Trail also has steep sections.
Swimming, Cycling and Tennis
The Neufelden Loop is a family-friendly mountain biking route. It passes St. Anna Church and PĂĽrnstein Castle, as well as the GroĂźe MĂĽhl and Neufelden Reservoir, before returning to the Neufelden tennis court. Check the route conditions before setting out.
For swimming, you can choose the GroĂźe MĂĽhl river bathing area, Neufelden Reservoir or the heated outdoor pool. Before travelling, check whether your preferred swimming option is available. The three options offer different settings for the same activity: a river, a reservoir or an outdoor pool.
Neufelden also has three sand tennis courts. Non-members can obtain guest passes; confirm access before playing. Along with the hiking and cycling trails, tennis expands the choice of activities you can consider when planning your stay.
