Explore Haslach an der Mühl through several themes: textile crafts and history, historic buildings, and experiences in nature. This gives you concrete options when planning your trip: you can learn about flax and weaving, experience instruments during a guided tour, or explore trails and places along the Steinerne Mühl.

Textile History and Crafts

The Weaving Museum was founded in 1971 and moved to the Textile Centre Haslach in 2012. It presents the stages of processing, from preparing flax to the finished linen fabric. The development of weaving technology is also explained: the exhibition ranges from handlooms to the Jacquard loom. This gives you an insight into both individual stages of the work and the evolution of the tools.

The Haslach manufactory offers a different focus. On guided tours, visitors learn about the journey of wool from raw material to finished quality product. If you plan to take a tour, check the dates in advance, as they may change.

Textile crafts take centre stage at the two-day Weavers’ Market. Since 1992, the market has been held annually in the winding lanes of the old part of town known as “auf der Stelzen” and in the market square. Around 90 exhibitors from several countries present their textile work and offer handmade products for sale; the number of exhibitors may vary from one edition to another. As the dates change from year to year, it’s worth checking the latest event information before your trip.

Instruments, Oil and Everyday History

The Mechanical Sound Factory displays 150 musical instruments and other musical exhibits, from the Baroque period to the present day. During guided tours, the instruments are played and their inner workings demonstrated. This means the focus is not only on their outward appearance, but also on how they are built and how they sound.

The Mühlviertel Oil Mill, locally known as Stahlmühle, is located in Haslach an der Mühl, where the Steinerne Mühl flows into the Große Mühl. Linseed oil has been pressed there for more than 500 years. The Merchant’s Museum, meanwhile, recreates the shopping atmosphere of a fully stocked general store from around 1920. It is closed for renovations in 2026; reopening is scheduled for May 2027.

Church and Fortification History

The parish church of St Nicholas is considered the most imposing Late Gothic church in the Upper Mühlviertel. Its free-standing tower was built as a defensive tower for the market fortifications. The Old Tower is a separate structure: it was part of Haslach’s historic fortifications, built between 1483 and 1487. The two buildings have different histories, although both are connected with the town’s fortifications.

Nature Trails along the Steinerne Mühl

Along the nature trail, stations invite you to experience nature through sight, touch and smell. There are also play and skill stations, and the trail ends at a playground. Welset Pühret, on the Steinerne Mühl, also has a 4-kilometre nature trail, a small bathing area and a small playground. Welset Pühret is freely accessible. In summer, the Steinerne Mühl offers a refreshing place to cool off.

Another option is the Haslach circular trail, which offers several viewpoints. The trails differ in the features specifically mentioned: the nature trail focuses on sensory, play and skill stations, while viewpoints are noted for the circular trail. At Welset Pühret, the 4-kilometre trail, small bathing area and small playground are all part of the experience. These differences can help you choose an outing that suits your interests.
