In Aigen Im Mühlkreis, you can explore cultural history, birdlife and trails through varied landscapes. The parish church on the market square, the birdlife exhibition in the cultural center and the described trails offer different focal points for planning your stay. The following destinations can be distinguished by their architectural history, exhibition themes and landscape experiences.

Church Architecture and History

Aigen Parish Church is a neo-Gothic historicist building that dominates the market square. Its architecture features gray Mühlviertel granite and red bricks from Prussian Silesia. North of the village, outside the built-up area, the Calvary Chapel stands on the slope of the Bohemian Forest. It is designed as a Baroque rotunda with open arcades supported by pillars and features a group of figures depicting the Crucifixion by Johann Worath, dating to around 1650. The two buildings make different architectural statements: the parish church is notable for its historicist form and materials, while the chapel is distinguished by its rotunda, arcades and Crucifixion group.

Birdlife and Other Exhibitions

The Bird Museum opened in 1993 in the local cultural center, a former elementary school. The Vogelwelt (Birdlife) exhibition in the Aigen-Schlägl cultural center displays around 650 exhibits about bird species and their habitats. These include ponds, field-and-meadow landscapes and forests, as well as homes, farms and gardens. Recordings of individual bird calls complement the exhibits and can be played separately. The exhibition thus combines a look at different bird species with the habitats in which they are presented.

Vogelwelt is open from May 1 to September 30 on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. Visits outside these times are possible by telephone or electronic advance booking. Check opening times before your trip, especially if you plan to visit outside the stated hours.

In the surrounding area of Aigen Im Mühlkreis, Schlägl Abbey has an exhibition on the 800-year history of the Premonstratensian Order. Also nearby, the Kultur.Gut.Oberes Mühlviertel collection—Lehner Collection—offers insights into the living and working conditions of people in the Bohemian Forest across an area of about 900 m². Selected objects explore agriculture and crafts. The abbey exhibition focuses on the history of the order; the Lehner Collection highlights living and working conditions as well as specific aspects of everyday life.

Forest, Moorland and Views

The Aigen-Schlägl Forest Educational Trail features a waterwheel and a rest area on the edge of the forest, with sweeping views over Aigen-Schlägl. It starts and ends at the Aigen-Schlägl market square or at the Höhenstraße parking area. The Mühltalblickweg offers a different perspective: it runs south of Aigen-Schlägl over the surrounding hills and opens up views north into the valley of the Große Mühl, with Schlägl Abbey and the Bohemian Forest in the background. The viewpoints described here are therefore quite different: the forest trail leads to a view over Aigen-Schlägl, while the Mühltalblickweg looks into the valley.

Nearby, the Bayrische Au Nature Trail leads through the Bohemian Forest into the Bayrische Au high moor. It ends at a platform overlooking the Moldau Reservoir in the Czech Republic; benches are available there for a rest. The nearby Bayrische Au high moor is notable for Austria’s only bog woodland dominated by mountain pine, as well as its diverse plant and animal life. The route and the moor offer nature enthusiasts different points of interest: the trail connects forest, high moor and viewpoint, while the moor is characterized by its distinctive features and biodiversity.

Within the municipality of Aigen-Schlägl, the demonstration floating site at Schwemmkanal Iglbach can be reached only on foot via a 2.5 km route or by bike along the Schwemmkanal cycling route.
