Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald: Stifter, borderland and winter sports
Accommodation in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald
Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: the Adalbert Stifter Museum and local history museum, distinctive landscape destinations, the Kneipp barefoot trail and winter sports at Hochficht. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide whether cultural history, views and the border region, or skiing will shape your stay.
Culture: Stifter, glassworks and wooden sculptures
Since 2005, the Adalbert Stifter Museum and local history museum in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald has housed a permanent exhibition entitled “Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald and the Three-Country Region in the Life and Work of Adalbert Stifter.” Highlights include the world’s only Stifter hologram. Glass objects document the era of three thriving glassworks in Schwarzenberg, from 1638 to 1863. Literary history and a local craft are thus presented side by side; the exhibition title places Stifter’s life and work in the context of the Böhmerwald and the Three-Country Region.
The local history museum is equipped with a contactless entry system and electronic audio guides. You can explore the entire museum independently, including the Adalbert Stifter exhibition and the Holy Sepulchre. Check entry arrangements before your visit. Wooden sculptures also shape the town: artists from around the world created them at artists’ symposia. Thus, alongside literary and glassmaking history, sculptural works are also part of Schwarzenberg’s cultural landscape.
Views, elevation and the border
Teufelsschüssel is a rocky viewpoint in the Böhmerwald with views across the Böhmerwald region. From the Oberschwarzenberg car park, it takes about 45 minutes to reach on foot via the Dreiländerweg. Plöckenstein offers a different connection to the landscape: at 1,378 metres, it is the highest point in the Austrian part of the Böhmerwald, the entire Mühlviertel and South Bohemia. The border between Austria and the Czech Republic runs directly over Plöckenstein; the Austria-Germany-Czech Republic tripoint is about one kilometre away. While views and walking time provide a point of reference at Teufelsschüssel, Plöckenstein is defined by its summit height and the course of the border.
Barefoot trail and winter sports
The Kneipp barefoot trail is artistically designed and offers water treatments for the arms and feet. The Hochficht ski area near the Schwarzenbergbahn is designed entirely to meet the needs of beginners and families. Nine lifts take winter sports enthusiasts from A to B on almost 30 kilometres of pistes in total, with varying levels of difficulty. The ski area has two kids’ parks, a fun park and a funslope. This gives you a choice of distinct activity options: a trail with water treatments or a range of pistes and facilities.
