Sankt Johann am Wimberg: Hiking, Views and Local History
Accommodation in Sankt Johann Am Wimberg
Sankt Johann am Wimberg combines hiking, local history and seasonal leisure activities. At 850 metres, the Hansberg is the highest point in Sankt Johann am Wimberg.
Hiking Trails and Views
Two hiking trails start in the town centre: the Hansberg Circuit begins there, while the Höhenweg starts at the hiking trail information board. It leads over Kalvarienberg to the chapel and continues to Petersberg; from there, the view reaches as far as the Alps. On clear days, the Petersberg Circuit offers views as far as the Dachstein. The difference is specific when choosing a route: the Höhenweg is defined by its sequence of Kalvarienberg, the chapel and Petersberg; the Petersberg Circuit is the option for a view of the Dachstein.
The panoramic cross-country ski trail runs over Petersberg, connects Sankt Johann am Wimberg with two neighbouring municipalities and offers views as far as the Alps. As a seasonal winter route, it requires different planning from the hiking trails: check snow and trail conditions before setting out.
Culture and Local History
The parish church of St. Johann am Wimberg was consecrated on 1 January 1147 by Bishop Reginbert of Passau. The Solferino Chapel, built in 1861, is located on the Petersberg Circuit. The Schnopfhagen Memorial on the Hansberg commemorates Hans Schnopfhagen. The Hansinger traditional costume is another local point of reference: its main colours are blue, red and grey or anthracite. A church, a memorial and a traditional costume tradition thus represent different cultural interests. The chapel also connects a historical landmark with the Petersberg Circuit.
Leisure Throughout the Year
The Lummerstorf leisure pond has a swimming area with a large sunbathing lawn and a sandy beach. Leisure facilities may change seasonally; check the latest information before visiting.
At the pump track in Sankt Johann am Wimberg, you can hone your riding skills on undulating terrain without pedalling. In winter, activities for children and adults are also available: during the holidays, the Hansberg ski school offers ski courses for children, ski lessons for adults and individually tailored private lessons. Children can learn to ski at the “Home of Kids” children's area at the Hansberg lifts. The activities therefore differ by type and target group; season and holiday dates are relevant when planning your trip.
