Explore Wiener Neustadt through the different chapters of its history: from medieval architecture and military tradition to museum exhibitions. There are also outdoor trails and seasonal activities. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping the different types of visits in mind: some tours require advance booking, others take place at a set time, and some activities are seasonal.

Casemates, Academy and Urban History

Together with the Strada Coperta behind them and its three tunnels, the casemates show how a bastion works. Guided tours of the casemates take place every Saturday at 11:00 a.m.; tickets are available there or at the St. Peter an der Sperr Museum. As the schedule may change, check the date before your trip. The Academy offers group tours of the exhibition “From Imperial Residence to Officer Training School” by prior arrangement. Allow about 90 minutes.

The Theresian Military Academy is the oldest military academy in the world. The St. Peter an der Sperr Museum offers a different perspective on the city’s history: its modern, interactive permanent exhibition, “neuSTADT ERZÄHLEN,” is devoted to Wiener Neustadt’s roughly 800-year history. The museum brings together the former city museum, founded in 1824, and the former monastery church of St. Peter an der Sperr.

St. George’s Cathedral also combines architectural history with distinctive historical connections. Construction began shortly after the city was founded, around 1200, in the Romanesque style. The cathedral is home to both the baptismal font and the tomb of Maximilian I. The separated area at the rear is open daily from 08:00 until nightfall, free of charge and without prior booking, via the church entrance on Grazerstraße. Access may be restricted for operational or religious reasons.

The foundations of Reckturm date back to the early 13th century. The tower houses a small, privately run weapons museum, which is accessible by appointment only. The collection includes firearms dating from 1630 to 1950, historical cutting and thrusting weapons, and equipment from the Austro-Hungarian Army. Those interested in other collections will find around 4,700 individual items at Neukloster, including 1,000 art chamber objects, 200 paintings, and 3,500 stones and shells.

Walks, Bike Tours and Seasonal Activities

There are various ways to enjoy the outdoors. Akademiepark is suitable for walking, jogging, cycling and horse riding. Wiener Neustadt City Park is certified as a “Natur im Garten” show garden. For longer bike tours, the approximately 2,000-kilometre EuroVelo 9 route passes directly through Wiener Neustadt, with routes in several directions, including to the Vienna Alps, the Bucklige Welt and Schneeberg. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out.

The Wiener Neustadt Cultural Trail can also be included in your travel plans: take the train to Wiener Neustadt main station, then walk about ten minutes to the main square.

From March to November, themed city walks exploring “Jewish Wiener Neustadt” are offered. Another seasonal attraction is the outdoor area at Aqua Nova. It has a diving tower with 1-, 3- and 5-metre platforms, a children’s pool and a water playground. Marienmarkt offers regional specialities, fruit and vegetables, and high-quality wines; individual vendors may change. The options therefore vary by season, theme and type of visit, from walks and bike tours to group tours booked in advance and seasonal outdoor facilities.
