Wiener Neustadt brings together a range of themes for a stay: city history, military architecture, and a city park with paths and seating. The cultural trail passes various sights, while museums and individual buildings offer their own historical highlights. You can devote your time to following the route or explore a particular topic in greater depth. When planning your overnight stay, consider whether you want to focus mainly on exploring the cultural heritage or also set aside time for the park.

City History and Cultural Heritage

The cultural trail covers 6.41 kilometres and passes a total of 29 sights in Wiener Neustadt. It offers a distinct focus within the city. The St. Peter an der Sperr Museum offers a different approach: the tour takes you through more than 800 years of Wiener Neustadt’s history. If you prefer to explore history as a connected subject, this museum tour is an alternative to learning about several sights along the cultural trail.

The focus at the casemates is on fortress construction and how it is presented to visitors. They are unique in Austria for their excellent state of preservation and are listed as protected monuments. A guided tour takes you through the “The City as a Fortress” exhibition and the defensive passageways, as well as past multimedia stations and 3D models. This brings the historic building together with a tour encompassing both the exhibition and a range of interpretive features.

Buildings, Eras and Collections

The cathedral and the castle represent different historical themes. Construction of Wiener Neustadt Cathedral began shortly after the city was founded, around 1200, in the Romanesque style. In 1751, Empress Maria Theresa turned the castle into what is now the world’s oldest military academy, the Theresian Military Academy. A tour in front of the academy’s famous coat-of-arms wall also explores a specific topic: a possible explanation for the abbreviation AEIOU, formulated by Emperor Frederick III, can be found there. The cathedral’s construction, the history of the castle and the possible interpretation of the abbreviation offer different starting points for a cultural and historical stay.

The Reckturm adds another listed building to this selection. Its foundations date back to the early 13th century. The tower houses a small, privately run weapons museum. Its collection includes firearms from 1630 to 1950, historical edged weapons, and equipment used by the Austro-Hungarian army. The Reckturm thus brings together two different perspectives: the history of the building and a collection of weapons and military equipment.

The 50-metre-high water tower offers a glimpse into the technical side of the city’s history. It was once part of the Kaiser Franz Joseph water pipeline and still serves as a regulating reservoir. Its former role in the water pipeline and its continuing function therefore coexist. If you want to include technical infrastructure among your interests alongside the cathedral, castle and military architecture, the water tower offers a distinct point of interest.

City Park and Getting There

For a change of pace, the city park offers winding paths and plenty of seating. It also has a large children’s playground with the tallest play tower in Lower Austria. This part of the stay is quite different from the historical tours and buildings: paths and seating define the city park, while the exhibition and defensive passageways take centre stage at the casemates.

You can also factor your journey into your plans: Wiener Neustadt station is within walking distance of the city centre. You can then choose a hotel based on your personal requirements.
