Lanzenkirchen offers a range of options for planning your trip: a river landscape with green floodplains, historic buildings, and several themed and hiking trails. The sights range from Romanesque architectural features to extensive collections in two museums. There are also various points of reference to help you choose a route, such as trail length, route, markers or a viewpoint.

Landscape Along the Leitha

The Leitha River and its lush green floodplains are the heart of Lanzenkirchen, which lies south of Wiener Neustadt. The landscape varies in character: the gentle, wooded slopes of the Bucklige Welt, including the Rosalia Mountains, reach almost to the banks of the Leitha. Across the river lies the broad plain of the Steinfeld, with its extensive pine forests. River floodplains, wooded slopes and open plains thus offer a variety of landscape features to explore during a stay in the municipality.

Churches, a Castle and Museums

Lanzenkirchen Parish Church has Romanesque features dating from around 1220. Ofenbach Mountain Church also has a Romanesque core. Its surviving frescoes are thought to date from between 1360 and 1390; this dating is therefore only an estimate. Frohsdorf Castle was built between 1547 and 1550 as a castle-like complex on the ruins left by the fire at the “Krotenhof.” The buildings offer different historical points of interest: from older church features and presumed medieval frescoes to the creation of the complex in the 16th century.

Two collections focus on life and history in Lanzenkirchen. The Agricultural Museum contains more than 6,000 exhibits that offer insights into rural and artisanal life in the past. The Fire Brigade Museum houses well over 3,000 exhibits. Guided tours there introduce visitors to the history of the fire brigade. The museums thus differ in focus: one looks at rural and artisanal life, while the other focuses on the history of the fire brigade.

Themed Trails and Routes

The historic Bourbon Trail runs for around 5 kilometres through Lanzenkirchen and has 12 stops. The Legends Trails offer a different way to explore the area, running through all the local districts. Their routes are easy and straightforward. Anyone who visits all the legends sites becomes a “master of legends” and receives a certificate. The trail network thus combines a route linking all the local districts with a clearly defined reward for those who visit every legends site.

Information about the individual hiking trails also helps visitors identify their different highlights. The LA1 – Frohsdorf Trail runs for about 3 kilometres through the forest, then reaches the main hiking trail and follows red-white-red markers. The LA2 – Hauer Trail highlights a magnificent panoramic view, reached after two hairpin bends. The LA3 – Ofenbach Trail passes through the local district of Ofenbach and continues towards Melberleiten. The views after the bends, the forest section connecting to the main hiking trail, and the route through a local district are the respective points of reference noted for these trails.

The Lanzenkirchen/Wiesen observation tower is 15 metres high and can only be reached on foot. Lanzenkirchen also has well-developed, marked hiking and Nordic walking trails. Routes and markers may change, so check the information before setting out. For cycling, Lanzenkirchen is connected to the Thermenradweg, also known there as EuroVelo 9. Since route infrastructure should be checked before travelling, it is worth taking a fresh look at the planned route. Hiking trails, the observation tower and the cycling connection offer different ways to include Lanzenkirchen in your travel plans.
