Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt offers a range of highlights for a stay: historic buildings, a short forest-themed hike, an E-bike circular route, and the seasonal Burgbad swimming pool. This allows you to assess the destination according to whether culture, outdoor activities, or swimming best matches your travel plans.

Castle Ruins and Fortified Church

The Kirchschlag castle ruins stand on the 480-meter-high Schlossberg. Remains of Kirchschlag Castle, built in the 12th century, have been preserved. The castle and the late Gothic parish church offer different insights into the town’s architectural history.

The parish church was built by the Pottendorfers in the 15th century and later fortified. Its features include openings for firing in the attic, loopholes, and partially bricked-up tracery windows. The particularly well-fortified churchyard gate is also part of the complex; it is the only one of its kind to have survived in the Bucklige Welt.

The Hofhaus adds a 17th-century example to the historic buildings: Johann Christoph Count Puchheim had it built as a manor house in 1651. A wall of busts adjoins the building and is unique in the transalpine region. The dates put the historical themes in chronological order: from the 12th-century castle remains, to the 15th-century church, and then the Hofhaus of 1651.

The Kirchschlag Passion Plays are a living tradition. Since 1932, they have staged the Passion of Christ, the Redeemer. The performances take place every five years and involve around 400 amateur actors. If you are planning a visit during the plays, check the dates in advance.

The Kirchschlag Rose Garden includes an adjoining fragrant rose garden at the foot of the mighty walls of the Kirchschlag parish church. Here, a garden setting and striking church architecture come together in one specific place.

Hike and E-bike Route

The Kirchschlag D13 Forest Educational Trail is family-friendly and described as a short hike. It passes the castle ruins and provides plenty of information about the forest.

You can take the Rosengarten Route by E-bike. It leads from Kirchschlag via Lembach and Stang and back to Kirchschlag. Its course is therefore described as a circular route with named stops. The D13 hike and the E-bike route offer different ways to spend time outdoors; they should not be confused with one another.

Burgbad Swimming Pool and Getting There

Kirchschlag’s Burgbad swimming pool has two pools with a diving tower and waterslide, a children’s paddling pool, and a large sunbathing lawn. The swimming season is seasonal, so check the opening dates before your visit. While the pool is open, you can also use a table tennis table and a beach volleyball court free of charge.

To get to the Burgbad swimming pool, take the Aspang Railway to Edlitz-Grimmenstein station, then continue by regional bus to the Kirchschlag/Gemeindeamt stop. From there, it is about a five-minute walk. Check public transport connections before you travel to make sure the approximate walking time and connection fit your plans.
