Miesenbach has its own hiking map and well-marked trails. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Miesenbach, you can plan your trip around the themes that interest you: hiking, landscape or cultural history. The trails and places described here offer different points of interest, from a 4 km circular hike to historical connections in Scheuchenstein.

Hiking and Landscape

The Wasserfallweg in Miesenbach is a good starting point for a hike to the DĂĽrre Wand. It is a mountain ridge in the Gutenstein Alps, stretching from Miesenbach to Schneeberg. The Austrian Long-Distance Hiking Trail 01 also runs along the ridge, where several sections offer scenic views.

The Gauermann circular hiking trail is 4 km long, easy to walk and suitable for children. It continues to Börsenhof Hornung, which is designated as a place to stop and rest. This specific circular route is described differently from Long-Distance Hiking Trail 01: the former is defined by its length and ease of walking, while the latter is described by its route along the ridge and its scenic sections.

The GauermannhĂĽtte is located on the DĂĽrre Wand at an altitude of 1,154 metres. It offers panoramic views of Schneeberg, Untersberg and Ă–tscher. The hut can also be reached via a longer route from Miesenbach-Waidmannsfeld station. After weather events, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out.

Cultural History in Scheuchenstein

The Gauermann Museum in Scheuchenstein houses numerous original works by Biedermeier animal and landscape painter Friedrich Gauermann. The church in Scheuchenstein is dedicated to Saint Rupert and was first mentioned in a document in 1252. It is originally Romanesque and surrounded by a cemetery and a wall. Gauermann’s grave is in the cemetery beside the church.

Another historical landmark is the Scheuchenstein castle ruins. They stand on a completely isolated rocky outcrop above the gorge of the Ungerbach. In the late Middle Ages, the castle was a multi-part complex with tower-like buildings, as well as an outer bailey and a system of defensive barriers. This system protected the steeply ascending castle path with several gates. The museum, church and castle ruins appeal to different interests: Gauermann’s art, the history of the church and the medieval castle complex. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1252; in the late Middle Ages, the castle was a multi-part complex.
