Discover Pernitz: Trails and History
Accommodation in Pernitz
When choosing Pernitz as a destination, it helps to consider the activities you have planned: the town offers a signposted circular trail starting in the town centre, longer themed routes, cycling routes and historic landmarks. Rail and bus connections are also useful for getting your bearings. If you are looking for hotels in Pernitz, you can start by narrowing down your options according to the kind of trip you have in mind: would you like to explore on foot, discover Biedermeier themes, go cycling or learn about the town’s history? The routes and points of interest below differ mainly in their starting points, approximate lengths and main themes.
Getting here and finding your way around
There are four railway stops in the municipality of Pernitz: Pernitz-Ortmann, Pernitz-WipfelhofstraĂźe, Pernitz-Muggendorf railway station (bus terminal) and Pernitz-Raimundviertel. Several bus routes operated by the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) connect at Pernitz-Muggendorf railway station. The buses, timed to connect with the railway line, link Pernitz with neighbouring municipalities and excursion destinations. To reach the Pernitz hiking trail starting point by rail, travel via Wiener Neustadt to Pernitz-Muggendorf railway station; from there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the municipal office. Check current timetables and connections before travelling.
Circular trails and Biedermeier-themed routes
From Pernitz town centre, follow the signs to Luckerter Stein or the green markers for the circular trail. The signposted loop also leads to the viewing tower. This gives you a clearly identified starting point in town and a named destination along the way.
The Biedermeier Erlebnisweg Piestingtal starts and ends at the municipal office in Pernitz and is about 13 kilometres long. The Biedermeier Erlebnisweg Muggendorf has a different focus: its 14 attractively designed stations introduce visitors to the distinctive features of the Biedermeier period and combine nature with cultural history. The two routes can therefore be compared by different criteria: the Piestingtal route is described by its approximate length and shared start and end point, while the Muggendorf route is distinguished by its number of stations and Biedermeier theme.
Numerous walking and hiking trails from Pernitz lead as far as Hohe Wand. As conditions can vary from one route to another, check them before setting off.
History in Pernitz
The altar area of the late Gothic church in Pernitz has been preserved to this day. Towards the end of the 15th century, probably between 1496 and 1507, a small church dedicated to Saint Sebastian and a Chapel of Saint Anne were built on Sebastianikogel. Over the following two centuries, they developed into an important pilgrimage centre and a major economic driver for Pernitz. The history thus links religious significance with the town’s economic development.
Cycling routes, winter and regional cuisine
There are also different landscapes to explore by bike: the Piestingtal cycle route passes through the Pernitz basin and reaches Gutenstein after a stretch through the forest. The Biedermeiertal cycle route follows the River Piesting. When choosing a route, you can compare these details directly: the basin, forest stretch and destination of Gutenstein on the one hand, and the course of the river on the other.
In winter, nearby Unterberg offers a natural-snow paradise for winter sports with the whole family. As this option is seasonal, check the current conditions in advance if winter sports are a key part of your trip. Pernitz’s culinary offerings include regional specialities and traditional cuisine—another local highlight alongside its trails and historical themes.
