Gutenstein offers historic buildings, places commemorating Ferdinand Raimund, the pilgrimage mountain Mariahilfberg and hiking trails. It is also home to the Waldbauern Museum, with a waterwheel operated seasonally, and transport connections by train and bus.

Landscape and Trails

Around 91 percent of the market town of Gutenstein is forested. The best view of Gutenstein Castle Hill and its picturesque rock faces is from the Lange BrĂĽcke. The figure refers to the entire market town; the Lange BrĂĽcke, by contrast, offers a single viewpoint of the castle hill.

The Kaisersteig circular hiking trail starts at the Waldbauern Museum Gutenstein and leads to a ridge with a bench and views of the Schneeberg. At Mariahilfberg, pilgrims can follow well-maintained walking paths to notable viewpoints such as the Sieben-Väter Chapel and to grottoes such as the Magdalenengrotte. The monastery and church on Mariahilfberg are among the best-known pilgrimage sites in Lower Austria. You can choose between different highlights: the ridge with views of the Schneeberg on the Kaisersteig, or the pilgrimage sites, viewpoints and grottoes on Mariahilfberg.

Museum and Architectural History

At the Waldbauern Museum Gutenstein, a sawmill relocated here from Oberpiesting adjoins the Alte HofmĂĽhle. Its waterwheel operates during the summer season. If you would like to include this seasonal detail in your plans, take the summer season dates into account.

In the area around its tower and organ gallery, Gutenstein Parish Church retains rubble-stone walls dating from its original construction in 1220. Gutenstein Castle was built as a stone castle between 1195 and 1220 under the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI. Both structures date to around 1200; at the church, the surviving sections of wall are a specific detail, while at the castle, the details are its form and its construction under Leopold VI.

The tomb monument dedicated to Ferdinand Raimund was erected and consecrated at Gutenstein Mountain Cemetery in 1837. The cemetery is also home to the Aratym Chapel, which Hubert Aratym decorated with murals in 1980. Aratym, who was from Gutenstein, was a painter, sculptor and set designer. The mountain cemetery thus brings together the tomb monument dedicated to Raimund and the work of a versatile artist from Gutenstein.

The Raimund Museum Gutenstein is housed in a former inn where the poet Ferdinand Raimund (1790–1836) stayed several times, and commemorates his life and work. While the tomb monument remembers Raimund, the museum is dedicated to his life and work.
