Mistelbach: Culture, Nature and Wine Tradition
Accommodation in Mistelbach
A stay in Mistelbach can be planned around a variety of themes: changing exhibitions, historic buildings, wet meadows and wine traditions. If you would like to focus more on culture, MAMUZ, Barockschlössl, Elisabeth Church and the Karner each offer their own points of interest. Nature watching and wine traditions add to these themes.
Mistelbach is on the S2 rapid transit line between Vienna and Laa an der Thaya. The route provides a convenient reference for travelling by train.
Exhibitions and cultural history
MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach presents changing special exhibitions and focuses on a different topic in human history each year. Lectures by renowned experts, children’s workshops and guided tours complement the exhibitions. Check the current programme before your trip if you would like to plan around one of these events.
MAMUZ Schloss Asparn/Zaya offers a different archaeological focus: prehistory, early history and medieval archaeology are presented there through interactive, modern displays. The subjects range from early periods of human history to medieval archaeology. In Mistelbach, the M‑ZONE is an exhibition space for art and culture at MAMUZ.
Barockschlössl also has a long history of cultural use: since 1980, it has served as a cultural centre for smaller events, including readings by poets, concerts and exhibitions. Alongside the museums, Mistelbach’s cultural scene therefore includes a range of event formats.
Historic buildings and details
Elisabeth Church was rebuilt as a brick building with glazed tiles and consecrated as a hospital chapel in 1905. The Romanesque Karner dates from 1200. Above its entrance, the tympanum shows two dragons holding a human figure in their power. Those interested in architectural history will find different eras and striking details here: the church’s brickwork and the figurative depiction on the Karner.
The Schwedenkeller is another historic point of interest: its underground passage was used as an escape route in wartime. This former function gives the site a different historical perspective from the religious buildings and today’s cultural events.
Nature, trails and wildlife watching
The Zayawiesen nature monument is one of the last wet meadow areas in the Weinviertel and provides a refuge for numerous rare animals and plants. Locals use the area for running, cycling, walking with a pram or dog, and birdwatching. It is therefore a place to consider both for outdoor activity and for observing the landscape and its wildlife.
Leiser Berge Nature Park is the only nature park in the Weinviertel. It has a well-developed network of hiking trails and numerous opportunities to observe nature. The area around Mistelbach also offers cycling routes ranging from leisurely to somewhat more challenging.
Wine cellars and wine traditions
Around 90 wine cellars line both sides of a hollow in the terrain at the Beim Baumkreis cellar lane. An old tree press can be viewed in the middle of the cellar lane. Regional delicacies and drinks are available at the iKu-Keller in Baumkreis Veltlinerland. The self-service cellar on the Beim Baumkreis cellar lane offers regional delicacies and wines from the area.
Baumkreis Veltlinerland offers insights into the tradition of winemaking, including a barefoot trail and a show vineyard with various Veltliner varieties. In autumn, you can taste the Weinviertel’s main grape varieties in the wine-variety tasting garden: Grüner Veltliner, Weißburgunder, Welschriesling, Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser.
Mistelbach offers options for a variety of interests: exhibitions and architectural history, nature watching and outdoor activity, as well as wine cellar lanes and wine traditions. Which of these themes you choose to prioritise can give your stay a personal direction.
