Discover Kreuttal: Cellar Lanes, History and Trails
Accommodation in Kreuttal
Kreuttal brings historic places together with cellar lanes, pilgrimage churches and trails through forests and countryside. When choosing a hotel, consider which themes you want to shape your trip: local history, a guided cellar-lane walk or time on the marked hiking and cycling routes. The sights are spread across different places in the municipality; their respective highlights can help you tailor your travel plans.
Cellar Lanes and Local History
In Hautzendorf, the Hohlwegkellergasse lies in a sunken lane; several cellars are still built of stone. The railway also has a presence here: Hautzendorf railway station was built in the Hohlwegkellergasse in 1870. In the town centre, the Rosalienkapelle on Rosalienplatz commemorates the cholera epidemic of 1850, in which 52 people died. In the park, the guild tree erected in 1972 depicts all the trades that were still active in Hautzendorf at the time.
Near Hornsburg, traces of the past reach far back in time. Prehistoric circular ditch enclosures show that Kreuttal was already inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. Today, all that remains of the castle are the Schlossberg and the foundations of a tower-like stone building, probably built in the 13th century. The TĂĽrkenschanze is also near Hornsburg: the earthwork has a circumference of about 4.7 kilometres, and its interior covers approximately 78 hectares. These dimensions give an idea of the scale of the site.
In Unterolberndorf, the cultural centre combines an early Romanesque history with a regular programme of events. The building is an early Romanesque chapel that served as a church until the 19th century; cultural events are now held there regularly. The LuisenmĂĽhle is on the Russbach, about 200 metres from Unterolberndorf, at the entrance to the Kreuttal proper. It is the largest and most distinctive of several mills on the Russbach.
Pilgrimage Church and Guided Cellar-Lane Walk
North of Hautzendorf, the pilgrimage church of St. Lambert stands on a wooded hill at the “Heiligen Berg” (Holy Mountain). The 800-year-old church is considered a particularly mystical place of power. Its tower houses a bell dating from 1452. Pilgrimages take place every year on Ascension Day and on Lamberti, or the following Sunday.
A guided cellar-lane walk in Hautzendorf combines the lane with a DAC wine tasting. It requires advance registration and ends at the Winter wine tavern, where snacks and drinks are served. This is a distinct way to discover the cellar lane as part of a guided tour. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, remember to register.
Hiking Trails, Forest and Cycling Routes
More than half of the Kreuttal municipality is forested. The forest nature trail in Unterolberndorf showcases the diversity of Kreuttal’s flora. For a hike linking several places, the Kreuttal circular hiking trail is a useful route to follow: it is the longest of the four marked circular trails, connects all three places in the municipality and starts at the Rosalienkapelle in Hautzendorf.
The circular trail also leads to the observation tower on Glockenberg. Glockenberg is 365 metres high, and the tower is 25 metres tall. From there, you can see the surrounding places and, on a clear day, as far as the Carpathians and Schneeberg. The view therefore depends on how clear it is on the day of your visit.
There are also different options for cycling: three circular cycling routes can be ridden in Kreuttal. The first runs via Unterolberndorf and Hornsburg to Kreuzstetten and passes directly through the Kreutwald forest. The Kreuttal cycle route runs mostly on paved paths. Apart from a few short sections on gravel and natural-surface paths, it is also suitable for road bikes. This information can help you choose a route, while the specific route and surface remain key considerations for planning.
Getting There by Local Train
Hautzendorf is the only place in the Kreuttal municipality with a direct local train connection. Together with the historic sights and the different hiking and cycling routes, this can help you decide which themes you want to focus on during your stay.
