Zwingendorf: Salt habitats, border history and cycling route
Accommodation in Zwingendorf
Zwingendorf combines distinctive salt habitats with a border history that reaches as far as Joslowitz, as well as cultural sites in the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Zwingendorf, the themes of nature, history and cycling routes offer a clear guide to the destination. The following highlights can help you decide whether nature watching, historical sites or a cross-border walk should shape your stay.
Salt Habitats and Nature Trail
The two nature reserves Glaubersalzsteppe and Saliterweide are located in the cadastral area of Zwingendorf. Rare plants, including halophytes, as well as small animals are found on the salt soils; some of these plants are unique to Lower Austria or even Austria. One remarkable plant in Zwingendorf’s salt habitats is sea milkwort (Glaux maritima): nowhere else in the entire Central European continental region does it occur across an equally large area. Halophytes are plants adapted to saline soils, which helps explain the distinctive vegetation of these salt sites.
The nature reserve exhibit at the Zwingendorf Village Museum provides information about the rare and in some cases unique fauna and flora of the Glaubersalzsteppe and Saliterweide nature reserves. The nature trail through Glaubersalzsteppe explains the significance of this nature reserve using multilingual, interactive information boards; the boards are also aimed at children. The trail is freely accessible at all times.
Culture and Border History
The Catholic parish church of St. Lawrence is a listed monument. Zwingendorf’s patron saint is St. Lawrence, a dedication dating back to 1784. The Zwingendorf Village Museum was established in 1990 in the Old Grain Mill.
The Joslowitz Heritage Room in Zwingendorf documents the history, culture and social life of Joslowitz, now Jaroslavice, as well as the expulsion of its German residents in 1945 and 1946. The Zwingendorf memorial commemorates the former home community of Joslowitz and is located 500 metres from the border. From the memorial near Zwingendorf, you can walk cross-border to Joslowitz along a vehicle or farm track via Europaplatz, following the border line.
Wine Cellar Lanes and Cycling Routes
The Zwingendorf wine cellar lane on Schatzberg is a historic, extensive cellar path. Its features include an old press and lovingly restored cellar buildings. On Stage 6, you reach the lovingly preserved and restored Zwingendorfer Schatz, a wine cellar lane with pleasant places to linger and take a break.
Stage 6 leads to Zwingendorf; along this stage, the Mottschüttelbach stream accompanies the route between fields and onwards to the Glaubersalz salt flats. The short loop of the Nature Gems cycling route passes through Zwingendorf; the bike tour starts in Laa an der Thaya or at the Thermenhotel. The options are clearly distinct for planning your trip: the nature trail uses information boards to explain the significance of a protected area, the walking route from the memorial follows the border line to Joslowitz, and the Nature Gems cycling route passes through Zwingendorf.
