Bockfließ lies on the southern slope of the Hochleitenwald and at the northwestern edge of the Marchfeld, right on the boundary between the Marchfeld plain and the Southern Weinviertel wine region. This location gives the town a distinct landscape setting: the plain and the wine-growing region meet here. Hiking trails, views and historical landmarks offer a range of themes for your stay. So if you are looking for a hotel in Bockfließ, you can shape your visit around what interests you most locally—from views across the landscape to traces of the town’s history.

Hiking and Views

The “8,500 Steps Trail” is about 5.9 kilometres long and leads to the observation tower at Franzosensprung. Bockfließ is also part of the route of the 70-kilometre regional circular trail “Wanderpuzzle Wolkersdorf.” Yellow trail markers indicate the Wanderpuzzle, which passes sights, natural attractions and viewpoints. These two options offer different scales: a route of about 5.9 kilometres with a specific destination, or a 70-kilometre regional circular trail.

Franzosensprung is the steepest and deepest point of Bockfließ’s main cellar lane, which is also called Unterer Tiefweg or Untere Kellergasse. An observation platform built at Franzosensprung in 2010 offers expansive views over the Marchfeld and the wine-growing region. All three names refer to the same cellar lane; they are not three different trails. Both the observation tower at the end of the “8,500 Steps Trail” and the observation platform are located at Franzosensprung.

Traces of Local History

In Altstatt, the former Jewish ghetto of Bockfließ can still be made out, including its square. A memorial and a plaque commemorate the town’s Jewish history. The square reveals the former layout, while the memorial and plaque explicitly address Jewish history.

The present-day church of Bockfließ parish was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1874 to 1876. Hans Adam Count of Abensperg and Traun had the Baroque Trinity Column erected in 1729 in gratitude after his family was spared the plague. The businessman Franz Falkensamer had the St. John’s Column erected in 1737. Bockfließ’s pillory is notable for its two underground prison cells, which are unique in Austria. Bockfließ Castle is known as a moated castle in the 15th century and was remodelled into a castle-like fortress in the 18th century. The building history thus spans the castle of the 15th century, its remodelling in the 18th century, and the church built from 1874 to 1876.

Wine and Herb Garden

Wine-growing is also part of the town’s character. White and red wines ripen on Bockfließ’s predominantly south-facing hills, and local farmers offer them to visitors. The hillside location and wine-growing are closely connected. The FNL Herb Garden Bockfließ offers guided herb garden tours by telephone appointment. If you are interested in herbs, the tour complements hiking and local history with a visit to a garden.
