Discover Wilfersdorf: Church, Castle and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Wilfersdorf
In Wilfersdorf, the history of its church and castle meets walking and cycling routes. If you’re looking for hotels in Wilfersdorf, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to discover historic sites, plan a cycling loop or choose a cross-border walking route? The routes differ in their mode of transport, length and stated walking time. You can plan your itinerary according to whether you’re interested in a single place, a longer route or connecting several stops.
Parish Church and Stations of the Cross
The originally Gothic parish church in Wilfersdorf was expanded in the Baroque style. The Liechtenstein family crypt lies beneath its altar area, which now has a modern design. The sarcophagi hold the ancestors of the present-day princely Liechtenstein family. The crypt is rarely open to visitors; bear this limitation in mind when planning your visit.
The Wilfersdorf Stations of the Cross are also known as Kalvarienberg and Heilige Berg. They were commissioned in 1674 by Prince Hartmann of Liechtenstein and his wife, Elisabeth Sidonia. Since 1979, the Palm Sunday procession on Heilige Berg has been part of the traditions of the Wilfersdorf village community. The dates refer to two different historical events: 1674 marks the commissioning of the Stations of the Cross, and 1979 the start of the procession.
Castle and Guided Tour
Since 2003, Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf has provided the setting for the Castle Festival. If you’re planning a visit for a future date, check the latest event details. A guided tour of the castle begins with basic information about the significance of the Liechtenstein family to the region. Check in advance whether you need to reserve a place on a tour.
Cycling Routes and Walking Trails
The Sylvaner themed cycling route is a circular route of around 60 km. It connects Wilfersdorf with Mistelbach, Asparn, Staatz and Poysdorf. The Liechtenstein cycling route starts at Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf and passes through GroĂźkrut and Bernhardsthal on its way to the Czech Republic. There, it passes Lednice and Valtice castles. The two cycling routes therefore have different itineraries: the Sylvaner themed cycling route links several places in a loop, while the Liechtenstein cycling route starts at the castle and continues across the border.
Another cross-border themed trail starts at the castle. It is 22 km long, with a stated walking time of around six hours. The Glaube in Stein pilgrimage trail starts at St. Nicholas Parish Church in Wilfersdorf. It passes the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and heads north towards the Abschieds- bzw. Urlauberkapelle. After 50 m, the trail reaches the Ă–lberggruppe, the first station of the Wilfersdorf Stations of the Cross on Heilige Berg. The walking routes therefore differ both in their itineraries and in the walking time stated for the cross-border themed trail.
