Pottenhofen: Cycling Routes, Parish Church and Cellars
Accommodation in Pottenhofen
Pottenhofen offers several starting points for planning a trip: cycling routes pass through the village or mention it as an access point, while the cyclists’ rest stop is on the outskirts. Other points of interest include the Parish Church of St. Florian, the former elementary school and the cellars in the Pottenau. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the route of a cycling trail, the history of the church or the location of the cellars.
Cycling around Pottenhofen
The Veltliner Wine Cycling Route is around 75 kilometres long and is named after the GrĂĽner Veltliner grape variety. It passes through Pottenhofen and Ottenthal before continuing to the picturesque wine village of Falkenstein. This gives you both an approximate total distance and a clear sequence of places to help with your planning. The distance provides a guide, while the name refers to the grape variety.
Another route follows this sequence of places: Mikulov – Ottenthal – Kleinschweinbarth – Falkenstein – Zlabern – Staatz – Kottingneusiedl – Neudorf bei Staatz – Wildendürnbach – Pottenhofen – Mikulov; it lists Pottenhofen as an access point. The Iron Curtain Trail – EuroVelo 13 – passes through Wildendürnbach and Pottenhofen on its way to Mikulov. You can use the respective sequences of places to distinguish between the routes. The approximate length of the Veltliner route and the places listed for the other connections offer different points of reference when choosing a route.
The Pottenhofen cyclists’ rest stop is a self-service station on the outskirts of the village. It is located along the tourist cycling routes Kamp-Thaya-March (KTM), EuroVelo 13 and the cross-border route “Hallo Nachbar” (“Hello Neighbour”). If you plan to make a specific stop there during your day, check before setting off whether it is open at that time.
Church, Parish and Heritage Protection
The Catholic Parish Church of St. Florian is protected by ordinance and is listed in the Lower Austrian heritage register dated 23 June 2026. Its high altar comes from the Franciscan monastery in Feldsberg. In 1783, a decree issued by Joseph II made Pottenhofen an independent parish; the decision to build the present-day church was made in 1859. These are two distinct milestones in the village’s history: the parish becoming independent and the later decision to build a new church.
The former elementary school in Pottenhofen is also protected as a heritage site, on the basis of a positive determination under Section 2. It is likewise listed in the Lower Austrian heritage register dated 23 June 2026. The church and the former school building are therefore two different protected buildings in the village: the church is protected by ordinance, while the school is protected by a determination.
The Cellars in the Pottenau
In the Pottenau, the cellars lie in terraces along the edge of the forest, around 500 metres from the village. The approximate distance indicates their location in relation to the village; the terraces and forest edge give this area a distinctive landscape character. In this way, the cellars add another local point of interest alongside the cycling routes and church history. If you plan your trip around more than just routes or historic buildings, the cellar landscape offers another topic to guide your interest in the surrounding area.
