Schrattenberg near Poysdorf combines a hilly, loess-covered landscape with a range of cultural and historical features. Vineyards and fertile fields shape the landscape; well-marked trails lead through vineyards, forests and cellar lanes. There is also the barefoot path, wine experiences with tractor rides and buildings with stories of their own. During your stay, outdoor activities, sensory experiences and cultural history can each take centre stage. The following sections take you from the landscape to specific routes and historical points of interest.

Trails through vineyards, forests and cellar lanes

The well-marked hiking and cycling trails lead through vineyards, forests and cellar lanes. They connect different landscape features and offer ways to explore the area on foot or by bike. Another point of interest is EuroVelo 13, which today runs along the former Iron Curtain in the Schrattenberg area. This offers two distinct themes to consider when choosing a route: the local hiking and cycling trails focus on the landscape, while EuroVelo 13 has a historical connection to the former Iron Curtain. When choosing an outing, you can decide whether the landscape along the local trails or this historical route theme matters more to you.

Barefoot path and wine experiences

The Schrattenberg–Valtice barefoot path has its own focus: eleven stations offer a range of sensory experiences. It starts in Schrattenberg, on Kleine Zeile. Unlike the hiking and cycling trails described above, the focus here is on the sensory stations. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

Wine experiences also include tractor rides through the vineyards of Schrattenberg and Valtice. Rides are available by appointment. If you would like to include this activity in your travel plans, arrange a time in advance.

Settlement history and buildings

The history of settlement in Schrattenberg dates back to the Bronze Age. A complex of buildings known locally as “Edelknabenhof” or “Dreiknabenhof” was once the seat of the “Lords of Schrattenberg”. Both names refer to the same complex; its former function gives it a different place in local history from the parish church and the show mill.

Schrattenberg’s parish church is dedicated to St John the Baptist and is one of the few Neoclassical churches in the district of Mistelbach. Its construction is associated with 23 September 1829. On 18 December 1831, the newly built church was solemnly blessed by Provost Mayer. The two dates mark different milestones in the history of the church’s construction.

Schrattenberg show mill was built as a mill for fine grinding in 1921. Its functional layout is presented across four levels. Alongside the history of the former manor house and the parish church, this offers a different perspective: the layout of a mill building. Together, these buildings provide different points of reference for exploring local history through its functions and eras.
