Discover Staatz
Accommodation in Staatz
Staatz offers several different reasons to visit: musicals at the Felsenbühne, the history of the castle ruins and church, and cellar lanes, wine and countryside. The Staatzer Berg is a steep limestone cliff rising amid gently rolling hills. These themes can help you decide which focus you want to shape your stay.
Musicals at the Felsenbühne
At the foot of a steeply rising cliff, the Felsenbühne Staatz regularly stages musicals. The open-air venue has 1,200 seats and is one of the largest in Austria. Its current focus has a history: in summer 2000, the venue switched from Karl May plays to musicals and was systematically converted into a modern open-air stage. If you are planning to come to Staatz for a performance, the schedule is a practical starting point for planning your dates. Check the performance dates for the period that suits you.
Castle ruins and historical walks
Staatz Castle was built in the 11th century. Guided historical walks to the ruins take place from May to October. The walk starts every Sunday at 3 p.m., except on the last Sunday of each month. If you want to plan your visit around a guided walk, check the relevant date in advance. This lets you include the historic site as a separate activity and take the exception to the Sunday walks into account.
Church and local history
The Provost and Parish Church of Staatz, dedicated to St Martin, was consecrated in 1907. It is designed in the neo-Romanesque style, with Byzantine and Moorish elements. The church also contains historic, partly medieval gravestones belonging to former residents of Staatz Castle and Palace. The architecture and gravestones offer different historical points of interest: you can focus both on the building’s design and on the history of the people associated with the castle and palace.
Cellar lanes, views and wine
The Staatz cellar lane trail passes through four cellar lanes: “Schlichtenberg” in Kautendorf, “Auberg” in Enzersdorf, “Trift” in Waltersdorf and “Loamgstettn” in Ameis. The trail offers sweeping and far-reaching views, with the striking Staatzer Berg as a constant companion. This outing therefore focuses on the named cellar lanes and the views, while the historical walk to the castle ruins takes you to the site itself.
Wine is another possible focus for your stay. In addition to Heurigen wine taverns, you can taste the Staatz vintners’ harvest in the historic palace cellar. Staatz thus offers two different settings for a tasting: a Heuriger or the palace cellar. If you plan this visit, you can include it as a separate activity alongside the Felsenbühne, the church or a walk.
Getting here and finding a hotel in Staatz
There is a free parking area at the entrance to Staatz for visitors to the Felsenbühne. When arriving from Mistelbach, it is on the right; from there, the Felsenbühne is about 600 metres away. This distance can help you plan your journey to the venue and your visit to a performance.
If you are looking for a hotel in Staatz, first decide what you want your stay to revolve around: a musical, a guided walk to the castle ruins, the church, the cellar lane trail or a wine tasting. If you have a set date, such as a performance or the Sunday walk, plan around the relevant time. This way, your search reflects the activities you want to enjoy in Staatz.
