Neudorf Bei Staatz combines architectural and local history with rural themes. In Kirchstetten, the history of the castle and church takes center stage; in Neudorf, the parish church and Marian column tell stories of different eras. A guided tour of Schmidt Organic Farm adds a focus on arable farming and grain. For some exercise, consider a cycle path and Route 1, a longer walking route.

Plan a Cycle Ride and Walk

The cycle path, around two kilometers long, runs through the municipality west of the L 24 state road. It was officially opened to traffic. Route 1 is an easy walking route, 7.1 kilometers long, with an estimated walking time of about 1 hour and 45 minutes and 23 meters of elevation gain. The two routes therefore differ both in mode of travel and in time required: Route 1 is a longer walk, while the cycle path is around two kilometers long.

Conditions on Route 1 may change, so check them before setting out. The distance and stated walking time help you fit the walk into your day without confusing it with the cycle route.

Churches and Architectural History

Several architectural and artistic periods come together at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Kirchstetten. The Romanesque nave dates from the 13th century. Around 1400, a Gothic choir and a Gothic tower were added. The high altar was created around 1700; its associated Calvary group was made in the second decade of the 18th century. The organ by Ignaz Reinold was built in 1826. The church therefore makes it possible to distinguish medieval architectural forms from later furnishings by period.

Suttner Castle in Kirchstetten also bears the marks of several periods: its foundations date from the 16th century, and the Baroque building was remodeled according to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The ballroom contains Franz Anton Maulpertsch’s first documented work, “The Triumph of Truth over Time,” from 1750–52. Kirchstetten Castle becomes a cultural meeting place for music lovers from Austria and abroad every year; the event is “Classical Music in Summer in the Weinviertel.”

The Neudorf parish church was built in 1724, and its tower was built in 1770. In 2001, it received a new church tower spire designed in the Gothic style. This adds a later architectural alteration to the older history of the castle and churches.

Places of Remembrance and Local Scenes

The Marian column, erected in 1859, stands in Neudorf’s main square. It commemorates the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, proclaimed on December 8, 1854. The Rochus Chapel, a wayside chapel with a curved gable, lies north of Kirchstetten, outside the village. Countess Daun of Kirchstetten had it built in 1679 in gratitude for her rescue from the plague; the wooden statue of Saint Roch dates from around 1700.

The Zlabern cellar lane offers a different local scene: it lies in the northwest of Zlabern and faces toward the forest. Together with the churches, chapel and Marian column, it adds to a varied picture of historic architectural forms and local places of remembrance.

A Visit to Schmidt Organic Farm

The guided visit to Schmidt Organic Farm begins in the main square of Neudorf im Weinviertel and leads to the farm, located on a hill at the edge of the village. The tour covers arable farming, grain varieties and how they are processed. After visiting the farm and fields, the experience includes a tasting of products in the farm shop. Check the booking details before you travel if you would like to include this tour in your plans.

This gives you a clear choice of interests when planning your trip: architectural history and art, a walk or cycle ride, or a guided introduction to agricultural topics. The route distances and tour details provide specific points of reference to help you choose what to focus on during your stay.
