Mistelbach combines museums and historic sites with routes through vineyards and orchards. When planning your stay, consider whether exhibitions, the town’s history or experiences of the landscape should be your main focus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Mistelbach an der Zaya, these themes offer a useful guide for planning your trip.

Museums, art and guided tours

Special exhibitions at the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach change regularly, each year focusing on a different topic in human history. The accompanying programme includes talks by renowned experts, children’s workshops and guided tours. The nitsch museum is also one of the largest monographic museums in the Republic of Austria, adding a distinctive feature to the town’s cultural offerings.

A classic town tour offers insights into the town’s history in general. Stops include the main square, the Barockschlössl, Kirchengasse and the parish church. Tours are available for individuals, groups, children and school classes; arrangements are tailored to each group. You can enquire in advance about a suitable tour rather than assume there is a fixed itinerary.

Another art venue is ZWISCHENRAUM in the vineyards. There, Heinz Cibulka’s picture frieze and Klaus Sattmann’s “Container” meet. The site is also included in a bookable historical tour. Please contact the Stadt-Museumsarchiv Mistelbach by telephone in advance to arrange a visit.

Architectural history and places of remembrance

The Barockschlössl was probably built around 1727 and is attributed to the school of Lukas von Hildebrandt. The chapel of the Barnabitenkolleg is one of Lower Austria’s great art treasures. On Mistelbach’s Kirchenberg stands the Karner, also known as the “ossuary”: built around 1200, it features Romanesque windows and a Baroque roof. The parish of Mistelbach was founded around 1060 and is dedicated to Saint Martin.

Places of remembrance also tell a tangible story. In rooms at the Jewish cemetery, a permanent exhibition documents the fate of Mistelbach’s former Jewish community up to 1938. Check current visiting arrangements in advance. The war memorial “Christ with Fallen Soldier” was unveiled at the Heroes’ Cemetery on 17 June 1923; an ecumenical service is held there every year on All Saints’ Day.

The Schwedenkeller combines a historical connection with cultural use: its underground passage served as an escape route during wartime, and the cellar hosts numerous cultural events. Another local tradition is the Lad-Umtragen of the Mistelbach Hauerzunft. It is part of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage; the Hauerzunft was founded in 1698.

Weinviertel landscapes and trails

The Dionysos Trail is Mistelbach’s first panoramic trail. It leads through vineyards and orchards, past grazing meadows and the enclosure for free-range pigs. The trail includes a grape-variety tasting garden: in autumn, visitors can sample the Weinviertel’s main grape varieties there, including Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling, Zweigelt and Blauer Portugieser. This autumn tasting period is quite different from the MAMUZ exhibitions, whose topics change throughout the year.

The Kultur-Genuss-Route is not signposted as a standalone loop. A GPX route file or PDF document is recommended for navigation. Mistelbach is accessible by train or bus for this route; the starting point is a short walk away. Check connections before travelling, as the route information was last updated some time ago.

Mistelbach and the cadastral communities of Paasdorf, Siebenhirten, Hörersdorf and Frättingsdorf are on the S2 suburban rail line between Vienna and Laa an der Thaya. Bicycles can generally be taken on board without difficulty; check current rail and bicycle transport conditions before travelling. A total of around 1,750 metres of cycle path connects Mistelbach with Hörersdorf, Frättingsdorf and Siebenhirten. The railway stations in the cadastral communities are also connected to the new cycle path.
