Pontevedra: Nature, Culture and the Rías Baixas
Accommodation in Pontevedra
In the province of Pontevedra, mountain landscapes meet the coast of the Rías Baixas. Viewpoints around the Rías, historic buildings, festivals and trails reveal different sides of the region. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding which of these interests you most: a natural setting with sweeping views, heritage in different places, or a trip combining the coast and regional traditions.
Mountain views, coast and trails
Monte Aloia was Galicia’s first nature park. It covers 746 hectares and offers views of the Miño and Louro valleys. The mountain is also home to the Muralla Ciclópea: the Cyclopean Wall is made of large stones laid without mortar, is 2,250 metres long, and encloses the upper plateau of Alto de San Xiao. The natural setting and the structure offer two different perspectives on a visit—landscape and the remains of a fortified site.
On the coast, Playa de A Lanzada represents a different type of landscape: the beach stretches for more than two kilometres and has fine, white sand. It is suitable for water sports. The Umia-O Grove intertidal complex, a wetland of ornithological interest, is also located at the beach. For those interested in coastal landscapes, this means that alongside the beach there is also a habitat whose appeal is tied to birds and tides. The Romanesque chapel of A Lanzada dates from the beginning of the 13th century and adds another point of historical interest along this stretch of coast.
The Camino del Sudeste – Vía de la Plata offers another way to experience the region. The route is listed as taking nine days and covering 212.3 kilometres over nine recommended stages. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, and passes through Dozón, Lalín, Silleda and A Estrada on the way to Santiago. This makes it possible to plan the trip around specific stages and your preferred mode of travel. Check the latest route information when making specific plans.
Buildings and traces of history
In Combarro, the ensemble was declared a historic-artistic site in 1972. More than sixty hórreos—traditional granaries—characterise the village; thirty of them stand right by the sea. These traditional storage buildings vividly illustrate the connection between the settlement and its coastal location. Combarro can be explored on foot, with the hórreos and the ensemble shaping the character of a walk through the village.
Soutomaior Castle dates from the 12th century. The fortified complex combines a double ring of walls and a tower with a palace attached to it. In Baiona, another chapter of history dates back to 1493: after the arrival of the caravel Pinta, the town was the first in Europe to receive the news of the discovery of America. A Lanzada, in turn, combines cultural interest with a Romanesque chapel dating from the beginning of the 13th century.
Archaeological and museum collections also give a trip historical depth. Castrolandín was a fortified settlement of the Late Iron Age and was inhabited between the 4th and 1st centuries BC. The Sarmiento Building of the Museo de Pontevedra houses a two-storey cloister and a stone staircase dating from 1722. The two examples are quite different: one is a settlement from pre-Christian times, the other architectural details with a specific date.
Festivals and regional cuisine
A Arribada in Baiona is one of the recurring events. The festival takes place every year and commemorates the arrival of the Pinta in 1493; it has the status of “International Tourist Interest”. The Rapa das bestas de Sabucedo and the Romería Vikinga de Catoira are also designated festivals of this status in the province of Pontevedra. The Albariño Wine Festival in Cambados has the same distinction. Dates and programmes may vary; check the latest information before travelling to a particular festival.
Regional food culture offers another way to plan a trip: the province is particularly well known for its seafood. It is served with Albariño, a wine typical of the region and at the heart of the Rías Baixas Wine Route. In Cambados, the wine is also the subject of an award-winning festival. When planning, you can therefore choose between a trip focused on festival traditions and one centred on food and wine.
A suitable base for your trip
When choosing where to stay, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip. Nature and views, the coast and wetlands, historic buildings, archaeological sites or a multi-day route each bring different themes to the fore. The festival locations and the Camino offer other specific reasons to visit that may also factor into your plans. Search for hotels in Pontevedra to suit the experiences you’d like to include in your trip.
