Alba: Wetland, Pilgrimage Route and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alba
Alba brings together the Xunqueira de Alba, one of the few natural wetlands in the RĂa de Pontevedra, and a rich history of churches and pilgrimage. When looking for a hotel in Alba, your interests can guide where to start: observing nature and exploring trails, learning about the architecture of Santa MarĂa, or discovering the town’s connection to the Portuguese Way.
Xunqueira de Alba: Wetland and Trails
The Xunqueira de Alba is designated as an ENIL and covers 67 hectares. The wetland has an observation platform for watching wildlife and birds, near the trail that starts at the O Vao Bridge. This means local highlights include both a large natural area and a specific wildlife-watching point.
The routes differ in focus. The Camino PortuguĂ©s de la Costa stage from Pontevedra to Santa MarĂa de Alba runs alongside the extensive marshland of the Xunqueira de Alba. The RĂo de A Gándara–Xunqueira de Alba route, by contrast, is 3.6 kilometres long and is designed for one-way walks or bike rides. Nearby, a 1.8-kilometre trail connects the Xunqueira da Gándara with the da Tomba forest park, located in the parish of Campañó.
Sacred Architecture and Culture
The church of Santa MarĂa de Alba was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century and completely rebuilt in the 18th century. The two dates distinguish the original construction from the later, extensive reconstruction. The chapels also date to different periods: San Caetano is from the 18th century, and A Devesa from the 19th. Alba therefore offers sacred buildings from several centuries for anyone interested in ecclesiastical architecture.
A cruceiro in Alba inspired Castelao while he was writing his work “As cruces de pedra na Galiza e na Bretaña”. Another historical connection is a milestone found in Alba and dedicated to Emperor Caracalla. It is considered evidence that Roman Road XIX passed through this parish. The milestone adds a connection to the Roman past to the area’s architectural history, while the cruceiro is linked to a work of Galician culture.
Pilgrimage Connections and Practical Information
Guxilde is also part of the pilgrimage story: it hosted many pilgrims because the Portuguese Way passes through the area. Alba’s patronal feast is celebrated on 15 August in honour of Santa MarĂa. The local connection to faith thus encompasses both the history of pilgrimage and a festival held on a specific date.
To reach the church of Santa MarĂa de Alba, travel from Pontevedra along the N-550 towards Santiago. At Alba, turn off after four kilometres. After 400 metres, you will reach a washhouse; the church is a further 500 metres from there.
If you are looking for a hotel in Alba, start planning around the purpose of your trip: would you like to focus on the wetland, one of the named routes, or the area’s churches and pilgrimage connections? This distinction can help you identify which aspects of the area are relevant to your stay.
