Discover Rodeiro: landscape and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Rodeiro
Rodeiro features two distinct highland areas. In the east lie the Serra do Faro and its surrounding mountain ranges, with elevations exceeding 1,000 metres. The western part is formed by the upper reaches of the río Arnego and the Camba Valley, where the average elevation is 600 to 700 metres.
Landscape and hiking
Monte Faro is the highest peak in central Galicia. From its summit, you can see parts of all four provinces. The Ruta do Faro is included in the Federación Galega de Montañismo network of short-distance hiking trails under the code PR-G 7.
Romanesque churches and buildings
The Church of Rodeiro is a 12th-century Romanesque building, considered an example of ornamental purity. The Church of Camba also dates from the 12th century, but was built as a patrimonial chapel for the lords of Casa de Camba. The two buildings therefore date from the same period, while their features have different emphases: the Church of Rodeiro is notable for its Romanesque style and ornamental character, while the Church of Camba is distinguished by its function as a chapel and its connection to Casa de Camba.
The Pazo de Trasulfe was founded at the end of the 16th century and has seven coats of arms on its entrance portal. The Torre de Guillar has a special cultural heritage designation: it is the only cultural heritage site in the Concello de Rodeiro catalogued by Patrimonio as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).
Archaeology and museum
The Porta de Arcos archaeological site contains the remains of an important Roman villa. Materials recovered there include column bases, 2nd-century bronzes, pottery, roof tiles and glass. The historical evidence in Rodeiro spans the period from the 2nd century to the end of the 16th century: from bronzes found at Porta de Arcos to the 12th-century churches and the founding of the Pazo de Trasulfe.
The Museo Municipal de Rodeiro houses a small selection of materials recovered at Porta de Arcos. The museum also has three permanent exhibition rooms, devoted respectively to archaeology, painting and ethnography.
