Discover Viascón: Route, Rock Art and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Viascón
Viascón offers two main focuses for planning your trip: the A Vía Escondida PRG-68 route, with river and viewpoint stops, as well as rock art and church architecture. Decide in advance whether you would like to focus your stay more on the route, the water or individual cultural sites.
A Vía Escondida Route and River
The A Vía Escondida PRG-68 route starts in Viascón and passes river bathing spots near Cabanelas. It also leads to the Coto do Ramalloso viewpoint and reaches the Portela da Laxe petroglyph motif. Near Viascón, it follows the River Lérez, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. The route therefore brings together the river, a viewpoint and a named petroglyph motif as distinct waypoints.
The Cabanelas river bathing area has access to the bathing area, accessible access and a recreation area with children’s play equipment. The Lérez is part of the Natura 2000 network; unlike this permanent designation, water conditions and possible wildlife sightings can vary. Bear these differences in mind when planning a stay by the river.
Rock Art: Portela da Laxe and Laxe das Coutadas
Portela da Laxe is the petroglyph motif reached by the PRG-68; Laxe das Coutadas is a group of engravings on a domed outcrop of medium-grained granite. The outcrop is 12.60 metres long and 3.40 metres wide. The engravings combine concentric circles with zoomorphic motifs, including deer. Zoomorphic motifs are animal-shaped; together with the circles, they create a juxtaposition of figurative and geometric forms. This distinguishes a motif along the route from a group of engravings with its own dimensions and imagery.
Igrexa de Santiago and Access Routes
The Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón was built in 1892. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the church also has a vaulted chapel. A Latin-cross floor plan describes the church’s layout as seen from above; the vaulted chapel is another architectural feature. To get there, drive along the N-541 towards Ourense; three kilometres after Tenorio, turn off and continue for another 200 metres to the church. Check the conditions at the turn-off locally.
Access to Laxe das Rodas do Lombo da Costa is via a 400-metre-long, steep forest track from the N-541. The track may be uneven or seasonally wet; take this terrain into account when planning your visit. To reach the church, drive another 200 metres after the turn-off; the rock-art site, on the other hand, is reached via the steep forest-track section. This practical difference helps you plan the two visits separately.
Outdoor Activities
Ecoparque Atalaia is an outdoor leisure and adventure centre. Activities on offer include paintball, river kayaking, rafting, mountain biking (BTT) circuits and routes, horseback rides and riding routes, hiking, trekking, orienteering and multi-adventure games. If you have a particular activity in mind, check whether it is available on your preferred date.
