If you are considering Covelo as a destination, the area brings together river landscapes, hiking routes and technical history. If you are looking for a hotel in Covelo, these themes can guide your travel planning. First, consider whether the Río Tea, hiking trails or cultural heritage will be the focus of your stay.

The Río Tea and its river landscape

The Río Tea river system is part of the Natura 2000 network from Covelo to its confluence with the Río Miño. In terms of its waters, banks and continuous river structure, the Río Tea is considered one of the best-preserved rivers in southern Galicia. Two aspects help put this into context: its Natura 2000 status as far as the confluence, and the assessment of its waters, banks and river structure.

Within the municipality of Covelo, the Río Tea is still in its middle to upper course. Its waters are clear and oxygen-rich, and its riverbed is rocky or sandy. Water conditions change seasonally. The designation of this stretch places the river within its overall course; clarity, oxygen levels and riverbed material, by contrast, describe features within the municipality.

Hiking trails and their landmarks

The Ruta do Xabriña (PR-G 119) is 17 kilometres long. The PR-G 95 Sendeiro de “Os Carranos” starts beside the former rectory in Fofe, descends to Maceira river beach and visits the Os Carranos hydraulic sawmill. The route also includes the Roman Bridge of Fofe and Trasfontán.

The routes offer different points of reference for planning: the distance is specified for the Ruta do Xabriña, while on the PR-G 95 you can use the listed stops for guidance. This means you can consider a distance in kilometres and a sequence of waypoints as different planning aids. Since trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The Os Carranos sawmill

The water-powered Os Carranos sawmill was built around 1922. Water power drives the sawing operation. Its construction date and power source provide two different points of reference: the approximate date places its construction in time, while water power describes its technical function. This trail destination thus brings together architectural history and technology.

Elevation zones and views

At Faro de Avión, vegetation changes with elevation: the valleys have meadows and cultivated land, the slopes have forests and smaller wooded areas, and the summit areas have scrubland and rocks. This sequence divides the landscape into valleys, slopes and summit areas. Faro de Avión is 1,151 metres high and the highest point in the province of Pontevedra. The elevation figure adds a specific point of reference to the sequence of vegetation.

From the Miradoiro Castelo do Faro, you can enjoy wide-ranging views across the Tea Valley and towards the Sierra de O Suído. Visibility depends on the weather. While Faro de Avión is described in terms of its elevation and vegetation, the Miradoiro is chiefly about the view across the valley and towards the Sierra.
