Redondela offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: historic routes of the Camino Portugués meet here, buildings reflect different eras, and several hiking trails are described by length and character. There are also viewpoints, coastal destinations, and festivals celebrating choco and apples. This lets you choose how to balance culture, landscape, and seasonal events according to what interests you most during your stay.

The Camino and Architectural History

Historic routes of the Camino Portugués, which begin in Portugal, converge in Redondela. The first Galician stage between Tui and Redondela follows the Louro River along a gentle route. The Igrexa de Santiago Redondela is also located on the Camino Portugués and the Camino Portugués de la Costa. Dedicated to the Apostle Saint James, it stands at the highest point of the old town. The church’s original structure dates back to the first half of the 15th century; it was built over an older building consecrated by Archbishop Diego Xelmírez in 1114.

The Convento de Vilavella lies at the entrance to Redondela if you arrive on the Camiño Interior to Santiago, and belongs to the Order of San Lourenzo Xustinianeo. The convent’s least-altered church has a rectangular nave divided into five sections by transverse arches. The Casa da Alfóndega, dating from the 16th century, has a different architectural style: its round-arched portal and two coats of arms define the façade. The Pazo de Reboreda is a Galician manor house founded in the 17th century by the García Prego de Montaos family.

The Miliario de Vilar, also known as the Miliario de Santiaguiño, was erected around the 2nd century AD as a Roman milestone marking distances. It belonged to the Via XIX, which linked Braga and Astorga via Lugo. The Viaducto de Ourense is on a different scale: it is 318 metres long and reaches a maximum height of 36 metres. The Cemiterio dos Eidos is also a place with artistically valuable details; its sculptures, tombs, mausoleums, and gravestones were complemented by a renovation in 2020.

Hiking Trails and Nature

The trails vary considerably in length and description. The Redondela section of the Senda da Auga is 23 kilometres long and passes through Chapela, Trasmañó, Cedeira, Negros, Cabeiro, Vilar de Infesta, Saxamonde, Quintela, and Reboreda. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out.

The Cedeira-Roteiro da Auga is a circular route of about 7.5 kilometres along the spring-fed slopes of Monte Penide. It is suitable for observing woodland birds and a remarkable diversity of amphibians at dusk; wildlife sightings are seasonal and variable. The route also includes the Coto do Corno petroglyph group, estimated to be about 4,000 years old. Here too, check trail conditions and signage before setting out.

The Ruta das Pedras Agudas is listed as 10 kilometres long, with an approximate duration of three hours and a moderate difficulty level. The circular hike climbs to its highest point at Pedra TaiĂł; along the way, there are views of the RĂa de Vigo, and the route passes unusually shaped rocks. The Fervenza da Feixa offers a different scale: a path of less than 200 metres leads to the waterfall, which drops about 15 metres. Check the condition of this path locally.

For a walk by the water, the Paseo da Portela is another option: this wooden walkway, about 1.5 kilometres long, follows the mouth of the Alvedosa River from Redondela town centre to the Portela neighbourhood. From the O Mellor Banco do Mundo viewpoint, you can see the Cíes Islands, the Rande Strait, and San Simón Bay. Monte e Mirador da Peneda lies 327 metres above sea level and offers views of the Ría de Vigo and the valley of the Verdugo River. Parts of the Fortaleza de Castrizán, built at the end of the 15th century on the orders of Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca, also remain there.

Museum and the History of the RĂa

The Museo Meirande presents the archaeological and cultural heritage of the Batalla de Rande, as well as the industrial and historical story of Rande. Its galleries explore the period, trade goods, the battle, and aspects of the canning industry; they also offer a view of the Ponte de Rande in San SimĂłn Bay. A monastic community lived on Illa de San SimĂłn in the Middle Ages, and the island is also associated with the 1702 Battle of Rande. The renovated facilities are used for sociocultural activities such as congresses, conferences, music schools, and holiday camps.

Coast, Local Produce, and Festivals

Praia de Cesantes has cafés, restaurants, leisure areas, and a car park; services may vary seasonally. Water sports activities often take place there in both winter and summer, depending on the season and programme. In the beach area of Paseo e Praia de Arealonga, you’ll find cafés and restaurants with terraces. Individual businesses and opening hours may change; check before your visit.

Choco de Redondela is associated with the habitat of San SimĂłn Bay and the traditional fishing techniques of local fishermen. Tasting is at the heart of the Festa do Choco: choco is prepared in a variety of ways, including with rice, in its own ink, and as empanada. The festival is traditionally held in the first half of May and began in 1987; specific dates, vendors, and dishes vary from year to year.

During the Festa da Coca, the figure of the Coca parades through the streets each year as part of the Corpus Christi procession. The celebration also includes the Danza das Espadas e das Penlas and floral arrangements for the procession of the Virxe “Gabacha.” The festival lasts several days, is recognised as an event of Galician tourist interest, and includes performances, concerts, exhibitions, and nighttime popular festivities. Dates depend on Corpus Christi, and the programme varies.

The Festa da Mazá takes place on the first Sunday in October in Santo Estevo de Negros. The programme features tastings of savoury, cold, and sweet apple dishes, as well as a competition for apple desserts. As individual programme details may change, check the information for the relevant year before your trip.
