A Cañiza is a mountainous area with varied scenery. Hiking and outdoor activities provide a common thread, but the destinations differ considerably: circular trails follow rivers, one route crosses wet terrain with seasonal lagoons, and others lead to viewpoints. There is also a recognized stargazing site, an exhibition of an artist’s work, historic buildings and culinary traditions. When planning your stay, consider whether you mainly want to be outdoors, take in the scenery, or also explore local history and culture.

Hiking routes by scenery and distance

The Sendero de las Fragas y Levadas del río Calvo y del Deva is an 18-kilometer circular hiking route through the Parada de Achas valley. Forests, mountain landscapes and the Calvo and Deva rivers shape the route. A 6.2-kilometer branch leads to Coto da Vella, where wide-ranging views open up. Trail conditions and access to the branch may change; check them before setting out.

A shorter loop is the 9.25-kilometer Ruta da Cidade Castrexa das Grades. Several sections run alongside the Deva River and smaller streams. The route passes through the parishes of Petán, Achas and A Cañiza. This lets you compare two circular trails of different lengths. The distance can help you choose the scale of your planned outing, but it does not determine how long the walk will take.

The 7.7-kilometer Ruta de Fontefría starts at an altitude of 790 meters and passes several megalithic burial mounds known as Mámoas. Here, flat, wet terrain, seasonal lagoons and several peat bogs define the landscape. This route therefore offers a different setting from the forest and river landscapes of the Fragas y Levadas.

Views and starry skies

The Ruta de Luneda leads to numerous natural viewpoints in the highlands of A Paradanta, an area of considerable landscape and cultural value in A Cañiza. At Coto da Vella, the Sierra de A Paradanta reaches an altitude of 940 meters; from there, the view stretches as far as A Peneda in Portugal. The Mirador de Monte Lapido offers views across the Ribadil valley and the Miño River, extending to the mountains of northern Portugal.

The Mirador de Montouto is recognized as a Starlight Park for observing the night sky. The site is used for stargazing, astronomy education, and cultural, educational and tourism activities focused on the firmament. It complements the daytime views from the viewpoints with another perspective on the landscape.

Art, architectural history and routes

The Casa Museo Diego de Giráldez features a monographic exhibition of works by the painter of the same name, who was born in A Cañiza. The parish church of A Cañiza was built between 1856 and 1884 and has three naves. Its construction period and three-nave layout give a visit a specific connection to the town’s architectural history.

A longer route also connects named places in the region: the seventh stage of the Vía Mariana starts in El Feirón, passes the parish church of Santiago de Parada and ends at the Santuario de la Franqueira. The route can therefore be described not only by its course, but also by its churches and destination.

Local traditions and a recreation area

Cocido Cañicense is a local culinary tradition in which celebrating and eating together go hand in hand. Another specific date in the annual calendar is the Feria del Jamón, held on August 15 in the centuries-old Carballeira del Cacharado. Both traditions connect a trip to local food culture as well as to the region’s natural attractions.

Praia Fluvial de Luneda is a natural recreation area in Gonda, beside the Regueira del Aceval stream, a tributary of the Deva River. The site includes a picnic area, barbecue grills and a children’s play area. So, alongside hiking trails and viewpoints, visitors can also find a waterside area with named facilities.
