Porriño: Hiking Trails, Landscapes and Architecture
Accommodation in Porriño
When planning your stay in Porriño, you can choose between hiking trails, a section of the Camino Portugués, a designated cycling route and historic buildings. The routes vary in length, difficulty and course—giving you concrete information to help plan your trip.
Hiking trails by length and difficulty
The long-distance Sendeiro das Greas GR-58 runs for around 22 kilometres through the municipality of O Porriño. Its difficulty is rated as moderate to low. This makes it considerably longer than the shorter circular and hiking trails that are also available.
The Sendeiro dos Muíños is eight kilometres long and is also rated as moderate to low in difficulty. Its distinctive feature is the areas of high natural and ethnographic interest it passes through. If nature and traditional culture matter to you as much as exercise, this description offers a concrete point of reference when choosing a route.
The Sendeiro das Insuas is a nine-kilometre circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty. It starts and ends at the A Veiguiña picnic area. Along the way, the route leads to a viewpoint overlooking Faro de Budiño and the Louriña Valley. The circular route and viewpoint give this trail a different profile from the two shorter routes, each of which is eight kilometres long.
The Ribeira do Louro – Gándaras de Budiño route is also eight kilometres long, but is rated as easy. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle, starts and ends at the Gándaras ornithological observatory, and lies within the Natura network. Compared with the Sendeiro dos Muíños, the length and activity are similar or more broadly defined; the differences in difficulty and natural features help you decide between the two trails.
The Camino Portugués and cycling
The Camino section from Gándaras de Budiño to O Porriño is 5.9 kilometres long. It is rated as moderate to difficult and has an estimated duration of one hour and ten minutes. The estimated time can help you plan your day; as route conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
For a longer bike ride, there is the Ruta Cicloturista O Porriño circular route. It was launched on 5 August 2026 and covers 30.87 kilometres with 594 metres of elevation gain. Its difficulty is moderate, and the estimated duration is three and a half hours. The route is designed in particular for mountain bikes and gravel bikes; its details may change. Its distance, elevation gain and bike type make it easy to distinguish from the eight-kilometre Ribeira do Louro – Gándaras de Budiño route.
Landscapes and places to take a break
The Área Recreativa da Risca includes a picnic area and offers views of the town and the Louriña Valley. It is also home to an interesting example of a Galician hórreo. Together with the viewpoint on the Sendeiro das Insuas, it offers different perspectives on the landscape: as the destination of a hiking trail and as part of a recreational area with a picnic spot.
The complex of lagoon and riverside woodland shaped by the Louro River includes streams, pools, seasonal ponds and permanent lagoons such as Fial, Centeáns and Budiño. This variety of water features and riverside landscapes offers another connection with nature for travellers who want to complement their hikes with scenic experiences.
Architecture and local culture
The Church of San Salvador de Budiño belonged to an 11th-century monastery. It preserves an almost intact Romanesque main chapel dating from the mid-12th century. The building therefore offers an opportunity to explore both its monastic connection and a specific example of Romanesque architecture.
The Templete de San Luís tells a different story: it was designed for the Madrid Metro in 1919 and partially moved to O Porriño in 1971. The time between its design and relocation makes it another building with its own story of origins.
In Cans, the Can de Pedra is a three-metre-high stone sculpture and an attraction during the festival as well as throughout the year. Beside the Church of Cans, there is also a place that pays tribute to the great figures of cinema who have visited the village. These cultural stops add to the choice of hiking, cycling and enjoying the landscape.
