Along the cliffs of the Serra de Tramuntana, the landscape descends to the sea; green valleys and clear streams are also part of this UNESCO World Heritage mountain range. On Mallorca, these landscapes sit alongside caves, wetlands and traces of Talayotic culture.

Serra de Tramuntana and Trails

The Serra de Tramuntana is the largest protected natural area in the Balearic Islands. In addition to cliffs, valleys and streams, its cultural landscape is shaped by agricultural terraces, interconnected waterworks including watermills, dry-stone structures and farmhouses. Here, striking natural features and traces of agricultural use meet in the mountains—two different perspectives on the same landscape.

The GR-221, also known as the Ruta de la Pedra en Sec, crosses the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca. The ArtĂ -Lluc GR-222 route connects the Llevant mountain ranges and their natural park with the central area of the Serra. The two routes can be distinguished by their described courses: the GR-221 runs through the Tramuntana, while the GR-222 connects Llevant with the central mountain area.

Another striking destination is the Torrent de Pareis, a three-kilometre-long limestone canyon in the Serra de Tramuntana. The natural monument can be reached via the road to Sa Calobra. Check road conditions before setting off; this makes the journey itself part of your excursion planning.

Caves, Nature and History

The Cuevas del Drach consist of four interconnected caves: the Cave of the French, the Cave of Luis Salvador, the White Cave and the Black Cave. The guided tour includes a live concert. Afterwards, you can cross Lake Martel free of charge by boat or on foot via a bridge. These two options offer a clear choice for this part of the cave visit: you can cross the lake on the water or via the bridge.

The s’Albufera Natural Park is a significant Mediterranean wetland, home to migratory birds and native wildlife and plant life. The Fonts Ufanes reveal another side of Mallorca’s nature: they emerge spontaneously after a prolonged period of rain. While s’Albufera is defined by its wetland and the wildlife and plant life found there, the Fonts Ufanes emerge after extended rainfall.

Archaeological sites also give the island’s history specific names. Mallorca has Talayotic ruins dating from the Bronze Age, including Ses Païsses in Artà. Capocorb Vell in Llucmajor is a Talayotic settlement. Together, these examples show that archaeological remains are spread across different parts of the island.

Mallorcan Specialties

Culinary traditions include EnsaĂŻmadas de Mallorca, traditional spiral-shaped pastries. Sobrasada is a sausage emblematic of Mallorca, made from chopped pork, paprika and spices. The two specialties differ in kind: one is a pastry, the other a spiced sausage. They complement the themes of nature and culture with a distinct culinary perspective on Mallorca.

When choosing a hotel in Mallorca, you can use your planned visits as a guide. First decide whether mountain routes, the Cuevas del Drach, natural phenomena or archaeological sites should be your main focus.
