For your stay in Puigpunyent, hiking can be just as relevant as local history and the landscape. The routes described vary in length, duration and difficulty; there are also sights in the town centre that you can explore on foot.

Hiking trails with different time profiles

The Camí vell d’Estellencs-Coll des Grau begins at the northern edge of town. The hike is 8 kilometres long, takes about 5 hours and is of moderate difficulty. Another route, from Puigpunyent to Calvià, starts next to the parish church. It is listed as 8.5 kilometres, about 3 hours and 30 minutes, and also of moderate difficulty. The two hikes are therefore rated similarly, but differ in length and time required.

An easy hike leads to Puig de na Bauçana and begins in town on the road to Galilea. It is 4.95 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours. The section at Coll de Son Marill, which forms part of the Camí Vell de Palma, is also easy. It starts on the Ma-1016 from Puigpunyent to Calvià, just beyond the Possessió Son Marill. This trail is listed as 2.40 kilometres long and taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The distances and times give you a concrete basis for distinguishing between the routes according to how much time you wish to spend.

Exploring the town centre on foot

You can set aside half a day for the walking route through the town centre; it takes you to all the local sights and across the Sa Riera bridge. This makes it easy to combine a stroll through Puigpunyent with visits to the buildings and historic places in the town centre.

Church, houses and local history

The Neoclassical parish church of l’Assumpció de Nostra Senyora was built over an older Gothic church that was already documented in 1236. Ca ses Monges is an 18th-century stone building designed in the style of traditional Mallorcan architecture. Next to the town hall stands the Pozo Nuevo: it dates from the 19th century and was restored in 1982.

In the higher part of Puigpunyent, Son Bru was the first organised settlement. Ca ses Rotgeres, a house dating from the 19th century, has been preserved there. The church, the stone building and the two other structures add distinct historical and architectural features to a walk through the town.

Landscape features in the town

At the end of Carrer de na Beltrana, the Comellar dels Romeguers offers views of the Son Puig valley. At the entrance to town from the direction of Superna stands the monumental Algarrobo de ses Sabates carob tree. Its growth is irregular; a supporting structure made of a dry-stone terrace supports the tree.

Events and when to visit

The Fira Ecológica, Payesa y Artesana takes place in Puigpunyent on the last weekend of May. It aims to showcase the municipality’s rural agricultural and ecological heritage, promote local products and encourage respect for nature and the surrounding area. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the current event dates in advance.

Various activities take place in Puigpunyent as part of Mare de Déu d’agost, the Feast of the Assumption. These include a music festival where emerging and established performers appear together. Events therefore complement the hiking trails and sights, offering another reason to consider Puigpunyent when planning your trip.
