Weekly Market and Agricultural Tradition

Sineu’s weekly market takes place every Wednesday morning around the church square, Fossar Square and the surrounding streets. It is considered Mallorca’s only weekly market with live animals. In addition to fruit and vegetables, handicrafts, clothing and shoes are on offer; the selection of products may vary by season. Wednesday morning is therefore a concrete point of reference if you would like to plan your stay around the market schedule.

The market is also linked to a food tradition: many people stop at local bars during the market and have the traditional Mallorcan dish frito mallorquín for breakfast. On market day, both the goods on offer and a local breakfast tradition take centre stage.

Agriculture shapes Sineu beyond the market. Local traditions include dryland grain cultivation, numerous grain mills and the Barcella, a unit of grain measurement dating back to 1240. These connections provide an apt historical setting for the Fira de Sineu agricultural and livestock fair: it takes place on the first Sunday in May and has medieval origins.

The Fira de Sineu showcases native breeds from the archipelago, agricultural machinery, local products and handicrafts. There are also demonstrations of traditional farming techniques and exhibitions of chickens, pigs, rabbits and sheep. The programme may vary from one edition to the next.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Along with the May fair, the celebrations for San Marcos at the end of April and the festivities in honour of the Virgin Mary in the first half of August are among Sineu’s recurring festivals. The Fira de San Tomás takes place on the second Sunday in December. It includes a demonstration of traditional slaughtering, with Sobrasada taking centre stage. These dates differ both from the weekly market and from one another; check the programme for the relevant year before travelling.

Church, Architecture and Historical Layers

The church of Santa Maria de Sineu was rebuilt in the Gothic style after the medieval church was destroyed by fire in 1505. Its distinctive features include a star-shaped dome with stained-glass windows and the Gothic depiction of the Mare de Déu de Sineu. This work, by Gabriel Mòger, dates to 1509 and is known as the Verge-sagrari.

The bell tower stands separately from the church and was built in 1549. A covered walkway, the Pontet de Santa Bàrbara, connects the two buildings. Together with the church, the tower shows how individual architectural elements can form a unified complex without losing their structural independence.

Other historical layers of Sineu can be seen at the Palau Real and the Convent dels Mínims. The Palau Real was built in the 14th century over an earlier Islamic alcázar. The Convent dels Mínims features a distinctive cloister; today, it houses the town hall, library and municipal archive. In this way, the former monastery is also connected to the community’s present-day life.

The streets, squares and buildings are also part of the town’s architectural and monumental heritage, which has its roots in Sineu’s Roman and Muslim past. The town’s building history therefore extends beyond a single landmark: the church, tower, Palau and convent reflect different periods and functions.
