Artà: Culture, Sant Salvador and the Via Verde
Accommodation in Artà
When planning a hotel stay in Artà, historic buildings and collections, as well as the Via Verde, offer different points of interest. Sant Salvador, the parish church and the Regional Museum showcase different aspects of the town’s history; the Via Verde is a former railway line used for walking and cycling. Consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.
Sant Salvador, the parish church and the Regional Museum
Sant Salvador is Artà’s emblematic landmark. The complex stands on a small hill, offering views over the surrounding area. It includes a walled enclosure, a sanctuary and the buildings of Es Donat. The present-day sanctuary was begun in 1825 and consecrated in 1832.
The parish church of the Transfiguration of the Lord offers another glimpse into the town’s architectural history. Located on the slope of Sant Salvador hill, it overlooks Artà. Construction in the Neo-Gothic tradition began in 1573 to replace the medieval church dating from the 13th century, which had become too small. Inside are up to 14 small chapels, a 19th-century organ and 20th-century stained-glass windows.
Artà’s Regional Museum is next to the town hall. Its exhibits include taxidermied birds and prehistoric objects from archaeological sites in the region, including Ses Païsses. Nature displays and archaeological collections thus offer distinct themes side by side.
Llatra is also part of the municipality’s cultural heritage: in the municipality of Artà, leaves of the garballó palm are woven. This skill is passed down orally over several generations. Alongside buildings and collections, this offers a distinct way to discover local craftwork.
The Via Verde and practical information
The Via Verde between Manacor and Artà is a 29-kilometre former railway line used for walking and cycling. Its route passes through the municipalities of Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Son Servera and Artà. It is therefore a distinct activity focus for your plans, with a route connecting several municipalities.
The Artà section of the Via Verde has a car park, an interpretation centre, a tourist information office, bicycle rental, local products, cafés and restaurants. Individual businesses may change. If you would like to visit a café or restaurant, or rent a bicycle, check what is currently available in advance.
The Teatre Municipal d’Artà also offers a way to include the performing arts in your travel plans: the theatre has a regular programme of theatre and other performing arts. Its auditorium has 460 seats. Check which performances coincide with your travel dates before your trip.
The Fira d’Artà takes place on the second Sunday in September, from the morning until around 2 p.m. The offerings include typical Mallorcan foods. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the annual programme before your trip.
Craftwork and travel in the island context
In the municipality of Artà, a craft centre is located in the old railway station at Avinguda Costa i Llobera 7. You can see and buy products from the d’Artà brand there; there is also a tourist information office. The availability of individual products may change.
Palma de Mallorca Airport is an important point of reference for travelling to Mallorca: most visitors arrive on the island by flying there. Direct flights to the airport are available from many European cities; there are also direct connections from the airport to major Spanish and international cities. Check flight connections before booking.
