Getting your bearings in Colònia de Sant Pere starts on the coast: Sa Platja lies in front of the town centre, and from there you can look out across the Bay of Alcúdia. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether the beach or culture in the wider destination of Artà should shape your stay.

Sa Platja and views of the bay

Sa Platja is a small sandy beach in front of the town centre of Colònia de Sant Pere. It is very popular with families in summer. They appreciate the easy access, golden sand, clear water, and the services and facilities available. The services on offer may vary; if you depend on particular services, check the current situation before your visit.

From Sa Platja, the view opens out across the large Bay of Alcúdia. It is bounded to the east by Cap Ferrutx. So the beach can be described not only in terms of sand and water: the wide bay and its distinctive eastern boundary are also part of its landscape.

Another coastal spot: Caló des Parral

Walking west along the seafront promenade of Colònia de Sant Pere takes you to nearby Caló des Parral. The small beach there has coarse sand and clear water; the Torrent de Sa Font des Parral also flows into the sea here. Compared with Sa Platja, this beach has different features: its sand is described as coarse, while Sa Platja has golden sand. The two places are connected by the promenade and the westward walk.

The Dolmen of s’Aigua Dolça

In the Es Canons area, the Dolmen de s’Aigua Dolça lies between Colònia de Sant Pere and the Betlem residential area. It is a collective tomb monument, built around 2000 BC and used until it was abandoned around 1650 BC. The two approximate dates refer to different stages: its construction and the end of its use. The dolmen is an archaeological point of interest in the area around the destination, but its historical description does not establish whether it is currently open to the public.

Getting there and finding your way

Colònia de Sant Pere can be reached by road from Artà and Santa Margalida; public transport is also available. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the latest services before setting off. These access options can help with planning without specifying a particular route or journey time.

Culture in the wider destination of Artà

In Artà, Sant Salvador is a landmark on a small hill, with views over the surrounding area. The complex includes a walled enclosure, a sanctuary, and the buildings of Es Donat. The present-day sanctuary was begun in 1825 and consecrated in 1832. It is distinct from the parish church of the Transfiguration of the Lord: located on the slope of Sant Salvador hill, it overlooks Artà. Its construction in the Neo-Gothic tradition began in 1573 to replace the medieval church from the 13th century, which had become too small.

The parish church’s furnishings also offer insight into its construction history: it has up to 14 small chapels, a 19th-century organ, and 20th-century stained-glass windows. The Artà Regional Museum displays stuffed birds and prehistoric objects from archaeological sites in the region, including Ses Païsses. It is located next to Artà Town Hall.

For the performing arts, Teatre Municipal d’Artà offers a regular programme of theatre and other performing arts. Its auditorium has 460 seats. If you want to plan around a particular performance, check the dates in the programme before your trip.

Events and routes in Artà

The Fira d’Artà takes place on the second Sunday in September, from the morning until around 2 pm; the offerings include typical Mallorcan foods. As this is a recurring event, it is advisable to check the programme for the year before your trip.

Those interested in routes in the region can also explore the Via Verde between Manacor and Artà, in the wider destination of Artà. The 29-kilometre former railway line is used for walking and cycling and passes through the municipalities of Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Son Servera, and Artà. It offers a different kind of outing from the coastal promenade: here, the focus is on a longer route between several municipalities.
