Coast, Water and the Townscape

Cala Banyalbufar is a pebble and shingle beach with a small landing stage and a freshwater waterfall. As access conditions along the coast can change, check them before your visit. Water is also present elsewhere in the townscape: Font de la Vila is Banyalbufar’s most important spring and has Islamic origins.

Sa Canaleta is a spring enclosure in the town centre. Its architectural features include two tunnels, public washing places and a chapel-shaped arch. A permit is required for access; check this requirement again before your visit. Above Cala Banyalbufar are the Molins de sa Cala, hydraulic mills and important evidence of the town’s Islamic past. They have been documented since 1240.

Church and Historic Buildings

The parish church of Natividad de Maria has been documented since the Middle Ages. After the corsair attack of 1545, it changed location; a new building was erected in 1691 and remodelled in the 18th century. The church’s artworks include a Neoclassical main altarpiece from 1787 depicting the Birth of the Virgin Mary, as well as a Baroque altarpiece of Saint Mary featuring a Gothic depiction of Santa Maria de Banyalbufar. Another altarpiece depicts the Immaculate Conception. It was formerly dedicated to Saint Peter and was created by Gaspar Oms in 1584.

Sa Baronia is Banyalbufar’s oldest and most important civil building and was the centre of feudal life in the town. Other historic buildings can be distinguished by their architectural details. Cas Batle Negre has a three-storey façade, a round-arched portal with voussoirs and a surviving segmental vault. Son Borguny is also three storeys high; its documented features include a round-arched portal, surviving wine presses and a vaulted ground floor.

Es Penyal also tells the story of the town’s development: the district was established in the 17th century. A paved path leads there from the village; traditional houses and narrow paved lanes define the area. Es Penyal also has a small viewpoint. Physical access conditions can change, so it is worth checking them before your visit.

Routes with Different Foci

The Vila de Dalt route is 1 km long, takes about 30 minutes and is rated easy. These figures give the route’s length, approximate duration and difficulty. Other paths differ mainly in their historical connections or the landscapes they cross.

De la Vila a las Teules follows centuries-old paths through olive groves, vineyards, vegetable gardens, forests and ravines in the Banyalbufar landscape. The Camino des Correu is a historic medieval path connecting Banyalbufar with Esporles. The Camí des Regants follows the restored Baix irrigation channel and links the route with the district of Es Penyal. The routes therefore offer different points of reference for your planning: a short, measured route, a path between two towns, a historic landscape route and a connection alongside an irrigation channel. Conditions on the routes can change; check them before setting out.

Regional Wine Tradition and Getting There

The area around Banyalbufar was once known for growing the Malvasia grape variety, which has since been reintroduced. Several wineries in the wider area offer tours and tastings. As visitor offerings can change, check in advance which wineries are participating.

Two bus routes connect Banyalbufar with other towns: L202 connects Palma, Esporles, Banyalbufar and Estellencs; L131 connects Santa Ponça with Banyalbufar. Check the timetable and route details again before travelling.
