Opera performances and major music events shape the summer seasons at the Sferisterio. The building has 104 boxes and was constructed between 1820 and 1829 at the initiative of a group of wealthy citizens. If you would like to combine your stay with culture, you can include the summer programmes in your travel plans and check the dates. The Appassionata concert series also offers a musical perspective on Macerata: its 19th season in 2026 will take place, among other venues, at the Teatro Lauro Rossi and other locations around the city.

Art and distinctive spaces

The museum collection at Palazzo Ricci comprises more than 350 paintings and sculptures. The piano nobile includes the Salone delle feste, decorated with a cycle of frescoes inspired by Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”. The collection and the room offer different reasons to engage with art: the paintings and sculptures are just as much a focus as this richly narrated hall. Free, unguided visits are available during the museum’s opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Palazzo Buonaccorsi brings together various collections and museum sections, including the Museo della Carrozza, departments of ancient and modern art, and the Galleria dell’Eneide. Ecomuseo Villa Ficana offers a different architectural setting: a village of houses made of earth and straw on a hillside on the outskirts of Macerata. The natural history museum is also housed in a historic building: since June 1993, it has been located in the basement rooms of Palazzo Rossini Lucangeli.

Traces of different eras

Macerata’s historic walls were built in the mid-14th century at the behest of Cardinal Albornoz. The Torre Civica represents a later period of construction: work began around 1492 and was completed in 1653. These dates mark different periods that can be seen side by side when looking at the city’s buildings.

The history of Helvia Ricina also goes back a long way: around the middle of the 1st century BC, the settlement became a Roman municipium. Roman stones, pieces of marble and several funerary inscriptions are displayed in the theatre of Helvia Ricina. These specific finds make Roman history tangible through the objects on display, while Macerata’s buildings illustrate other historical periods.

Walks and views

The Le quattro porte walk offers views of the Monti Sibillini and the Adriatic Sea. The four gateways to the old town lie along the city walls and can be explored on a pleasant, flat walk. A park on a hill in Montalbano, on the outskirts of the city, offers a different landscape: from there, the view extends across the Potenza and Chienti valleys.

You can include different views in your travel plans: the Le quattro porte walk looks out towards the Monti Sibillini and the Adriatic Sea, while the park in Montalbano overlooks the two valleys. If you would like to make time outdoors as well as for cultural attractions, use these details as a guide when choosing activities.
