If you are looking for a hotel in Tolentino, the reason for your trip may help you decide. The themes range from humorous art and theatre to archaeology; natural sites and the signposting of the Via Lauretana also form part of the picture. Before booking, you can consider whether to focus on collections, theatre history or the landscape. The various venues offer different historical and thematic perspectives.

Art, Humour and Theatre

The MIUMOR – Museo Internazionale dell’Umorismo nell’Arte is dedicated to humorous art and caricature. It preserves more than 4,000 original works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints and engravings. The collection thus encompasses several artistic forms, while remaining clearly focused on humour and caricature.

The Poltrona Frau Museum takes a different approach. Opened in 2012, the museum preserves original materials and documents on the company’s history and development. Alongside the art collections, it offers a distinct perspective on the company’s history and the records that document it.

The Teatro Vaccaj also connects history with a current programme of events. It was completed in 1795 and opened on 10 September 1797 under the name Teatro dell’Aquila. Today, it hosts the Municipality of Tolentino’s theatre season, various music series, performances and other events throughout the year. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your chosen travel period.

Archaeology Across Different Periods

The Museo Civico Archeologico di Tolentino was founded in 1882 and is one of the earliest museums in the Marche region. Its collections preserve finds from the Picene culture as well as archaeological evidence from Roman times associated with ancient Tolentinum. Another prehistoric trace is the Mesolithic site in Contrada Pace: so far, it is considered the only site in the Marche region that can be attributed to this period. The site and the collections thus represent different periods, from prehistory to Roman times.

Castello della Rancia has a history spanning more than 700 years and houses the Museo Archeologico Aristide Gentiloni Silverj. The exhibition “Attorno al fuoco 10.000 anni fa” offers another archaeological perspective. Its activities include a simulated archaeological excavation, reproductions of Mesolithic art objects, and the making of prehistoric tools and weapons by flint knapping.

Artworks, Time and Nature

The Museo del Santuario di San Nicola displays its collections across eight rooms. They include artworks and artisanal objects from different periods, from the 4th or 5th century to the 20th century. The Torre degli Orologi offers a different view of time: its four clock faces show the phases of the moon, Italian hours, astronomical time and the calendar. While the museum collection spans a long period, the tower is devoted to different ways of displaying time.

Two different sites are associated with nature. A nature oasis has been established below the Ponte del Diavolo. La Selva is a largely unspoilt forest covering more than 100 hectares, designated by the Marche region as a protected botanical area. The Via Lauretana is signposted in both directions with its own markers. Alongside museums, historic buildings and events, nature and a marked route may therefore also be of interest when planning your trip.

When making your choice, you can focus on what matters most for your trip, such as the archaeological collections, theatre history or nature. If you are travelling to Tolentino for a performance, factor its date into your plans.
